Despite stumbling on her in the midst of birthing her young, I was allowed to live, which displays her ability to recognize that I posed no threat, otherwise I would have been torn to pieces. I merely observed from afar as she gave birth. The peculiar thing is that this species seems to give live birth to offspring that are capable of walking and eating meat almost immediately since the mother seemed to possess no mammary glands. I am unsure if this lone deathclaw is an anomaly or some manner of interbreeding with the hairy deathclaws who birth live young, since most of their kind, especially the east-coast hybrids, lay eggs. Maybe this is a trait that has evolved to make them more capable of survival in the harsh wasteland. Since she was alone I assume she had been cast out, because they rarely leave their nests except in search of food. Deathclaws are social creatures after all, very territorial as well as having great parental care for their young. Since the FEV is still warping their genome perhaps it is a variant of the original species before the Master manipulated them into what they are now. They were a genetic experiment that mixed mammalian and reptilian DNA and existed well before the great war as military experiments.
