A pulsating portal in the sky that linked Earth to fantasy worlds, it could not be travelled through by living beings, but magical energy was capable of leaking out and affecting our planet.\n\nThe main result of this was a change in human biology. Some time after the age of 20, every human would be altered in some way by the rift in an event people began to call their Awakening. Most humans stayed the same species, but would gain some form of magical power or fantasy-like abilities.\n\nFor a small subset of humans, the changes were more drastic. People became elegant elves, or powerful muscular orcs. A very unlucky few would become monstrous beasts, or an even unluckier person might become nothing but an enchanted item like a talking sword or a pair of enchanted boots. The specifics were different for everyone. One person might become an ageless elf at 20, another might have nothing happen to them until the age of 75 when they suddenly became a magnificent dragon.\n\nAlexander had lived in the post-rift world his whole life, so none of this was a surprise. As a dorky, bookish nerd, he had always hoped his Awakening would grant him the powers of a wizard, or maybe even turn him into a graceful and beautiful elf. When he visited an oracle to get a hint about his change though, he was disgusted to hear he was going to become a short, dumb, ugly goblin.\n\nThat couldn't be right, that didn't fit who he was inside at all! Yet one day it began, he felt the lurch inside him as the magic began to change him. His body started to compress, shrinking bit by bit, his clothing getting baggy. His skin became rougher, slowly darkening to a mossy green.
