I've had the idea that he was a death knight for ages, and I was really pleased when I thought about doing a whole separate story to introduce him. I've grown to like Warren quite a bit, and Val too, so we'll have to see where the two of them end up.\n\nTo elaborate on the ending a bit: I've been working on some other commissions in the background for a commissioner who has a buttload of characters, and has encouraged me to pepper in a few of mine here and there. The ending of this piece coincides with one of these commissions (none of which I have posted yet) and I'm currently debating on whether to post said commission yet, canon be damned, or wait. It's a good piece if you ask me, but I dunno how much sense it'll make without having read the ones preceding it, at least in regard to the commissioner's original characters.\n\nBut I know how much y'all love the Shadowclaws, so... "writing": "<12>\n\n\tBob’s demeanor appeared to change in the blink of an eye. Any hesitation or uncertainty in him disappeared. The glow in his eyes flared up, and he grasped his sword with both hands and spun. The charging worgen leapt through the air, and his runeblade caught the closest one squarely in the gut. The death knight spun again as quick as could be, taking the worgen in a full circle, then launching the half-beast off the blade and right into three more attacking worgen. His moves were lightning quick, as if he wore naught but plainclothes instead of full plate, and he lashed out at the remaining two worgen with several vicious strikes. Growls and roars turned into whimpers, and the three injured worgen scrambled to retreat. The remaining three tried to pick themselves up as the one who’d crashed into them ran, but the closest one found the runeblade piercing his chest before he’d gotten the chance to rise. The life left his eyes almost immediately, which was more than enough to send the other two fleeing for their lives.\n\n\t”You’re good,” Val muttered incredulously as she bolted for the death knight. “Glad you’re on my side!”\n\n\tHe yanked his blade out of the dead feral worgen and flicked the blood from it, then started to brush the rest of the grime off its hilt. When he looked up at Val, however, he wasn’t smiling.\n\n\tVal stopped a few feet from him out of sheer caution. “You… you remember, don’t’cha?”\n\n\t”I do,” he echoed, sporting a much more obvious Gilnean accent now. “I remember everything.”\n\n\t”Well don’t keep me in suspense then! Tell me about yourself!”\n\n\tStill, he did not smile. “I never got to ask before -never thought to- but… what year is it?” He didn’t wait for an answer before beginning to walk southward again. Just because he fended off the scouting pack, didn’t mean that it was safe.\n\n\tVal followed a few steps behind him. It was apparent he was sorting through his regained memories, and part of her still wanted to be careful in case he turned on her. “It’s 33 ADP.”\n\n\tThe worgen winced visibly. “Fuck.” Val didn’t take her eyes off him, but she kept silent and waited for him to continue of his own accord. He noticed this when he glanced back at her and sighed. “Fifteen years ago I died defending my home, Gilneas, from the Forsaken. I’m a natural-born worgen; both my parents were cursed while I was conceived. Can’t say for sure if my death mattered -my parents died doing the same thing years before I did- but the next thing I remember after that was waking up before the Lich King himself. I became one of his captains and was relocated to Northrend to fight for him. Didn’t have much choice, he let me see and feel everything, but he had total control over me. I did his bidding for a few years before he was slain, and me and my fellow knights were free of his control. Free to do as we wished.”\n\n\tVal glanced back at the shrinking dock behind them. “You tried to go home?”\n\n\t”I did. We did. I didn’t know my companions well, but we set out from Icecrown on foot to make for the shore. We were met with resistance by the local worgen and some undead that were still roaming. We came to this dock, hopeful, and repaired a ship that had been beached and attacked by the scourge. The last thing I did was leave my sword behind. I wanted to leave all of this shitty life behind.” He stopped briefly in his tracks and half-heartedly slashed at the sand in front of him. “Didn’t matter either. Bloodsails attacked and destroyed our ship, not unlike Ashton did to us yesterday. I must’ve hit the water hard, or the exploding ship debris caught me in the head. I don’t honestly know, but the next thing I remember is waking up to you pounding on my chest.”\n\n\tVal did some quick and dirty math in her head. “Wait… you were just floating in the ocean for-“\n\n\t”Ten years,” he finished for her. “Couldn’t drown and my mind was dormant I guess. I can only assume that my companions fared better, but I don’t really care anymore.”\n\n\tTheir shipwreck sight came into view as they walked, but Val was still fixated on her worgen companion. “Well that’s good eh? You can go home now!”\n\n\tThe worgen screwed his eyes shut and stopped dead in his tracks. “I can’t.”\n\n\t“The hell ya can’t! Why not?” She persisted.\n\n\t”Because I made a promise.”\n\n\tVal felt her heart flutter. “Well sure, but those don’t have to be mutually exclusive. I’ll come with you.”\n\n\t”I can’t take you back home with me, not in good conscience,” he rumbled. “I… I have a wife and daughter.”\n\n\tThe color drained from Val’s face. “Oh.”\n\n\tThe worgen snorted. “I wanted to go home before, and leave the path of the death knight forever. This experience has taught me that I can’t abandon who I am any more than I can change the past. It catches up to you no matter what. I don’t think they’d accept me anyway, if they’re even still alive fifteen years later. I died hoping that my sacrifice would keep them safe, but… traveling all that way to find them dead might do me in for good.”\n\n\tVal searched his eyes carefully. “But… wouldn’t you rather at least know?”\n\n\tHe scoffed. “My daughter was only three when I died. I bet she doesn’t even remember me anymore. And, well…” he paused to place a hand over his breastplate, emphasizing the scar beneath it. “… the living don’t exactly appreciate my unusual circumstances, blood or not.”\n\n\t”Well… I do,” she confessed and placed her hand over his, smiling. Her heart quietly broke for the man she’d come to care for. “Your future is yours to make, whatever you decide… but I wanna be there to see it.”\n\n\tThe worgen let out a soft laugh. “After the hell I’ve put you through?”\n\n\t”Pssh! Excitement follows you, Bob! I’ve felt more alive around you than before I started sailing. Plus, y’know, the sex is pretty damn good.”\n\n\tThe worgen let out a full-on belly laugh at this and squeezed his lover’s hand. “Alright, alright, fair. You’ve convinced me. But my name’s not Bob, and I low key hated it from the beginning.”\n\n\tVal laughed in return. “Fair’s fair! What is your name anyway, big guy?”\n\n\tThe worgen bowed his head respectfully. “Warren Romoson, at your service.”\n\n<Two Years Later>\n\n\t”Boy that kingdom really shot up like a weed outta nowhere,” Val remarked and put down her binoculars. “Maybe we should go in sometime? Could be fun to buy things like we normies used to instead of foragin’ for everything.”\n\n\tWarren chuckled. “Not on your life. I’m not saying they shouldn’t’ve come, but I’m not real keen on how much of our hunting grounds they’ve taken up with them walls. The ferals are getting aggressive because of it.”\n\n\tVal nodded and shrugged, then gently rested her back against his, The two of them were seated upon a small nook high enough in the northern mountains to get a decent view of most of Grizzly Hills. A cave in the mountains had been their home for the past two years, and Warren had chosen to keep a particularly close eye on the local worgen population. “Well, maybe we should consider paring them down a bit? Wouldn’t take much for us.”\n\n\t”As good of a shot as you are, I’d rather we stay in the shadows, luv. The less we’re seen, the better.”\n\n\tVal stuck out her tongue and blew a raspberry. “Party pooper. But you’ve kept me alive this long, I s’pose you’ve got a point.”\n\n\tWarren shrugged. “It’s a living. It could be worse, we could be-“. The words caught in his throat. A brilliant blue swirl of magic appeared in the sky off in the distance. “Binoculars, quick!” Val handed them over, and Warren watched as a pair of worgen and a human fell through the air and tumbled into a small pond below. The death knight tried his best to magnify the sight as best as he could, but he hardly needed to. The human ran off, but the two worgen picked themselves up. The taller of the two was far more silver-furred than Warren recalled, but that eyepatch was unmistakable.\n\n\tVal squinted to try and watch with him. “I can’t see a damn thing, what is it?! They alive?”\n\n\t”They are,” he said quietly. “One of them… he’s my father-in-law.”\n\n\t”You’re shittin’ me!?” Val said in shock.\n\n\t”Not a bit.” Warren watched the worgen take their human forms as a second trio fell through the same portal. The human disappeared before the worgen had even hit the water, and Warren found himself fascinated by these two. One of them had fur as white as snow, but he only saw it briefly before she reverted to her human form. The other man followed suit, then met up with father-in-law and his companion. All four of them spoke briefly, then began to walk. “Now why Carson would be all the way out here is beyond me. I bet Di made the portal though. He’s not really all that fond of conflict, so… something must have really agitated him.”\n\n\tVal puffed out her cheeks and nudged him firmly. “Then maybe he could use some help from a friendly face, hmm?” Despite their enduring relationship, Val consistently tried to encourage Warren to seek out his family, though she hadn’t had much luck persuading him after two years.\n\n\tAnd this instance was no different. “No. No need to stir the pot. Let the sleeping dogs lie.”\n\n\t“Ironic,” Val groaned and planted her chin in one hand.\n\n* * * * *\n\n\tEven though Warren had dismissed it, the death knight had chosen to keep watch over the group throughout the night and the next day. Things only went from bad to worse for them, and when he saw Carson get carried away by the pack of ferals, Warren nearly crushed the binoculars in one hand. “Val, get your boomstick.”\n\n\t“Already got it,” she said excitedly. “Change your mind?”\n\n\t”No, we keep to the shadows,” he insisted and sheathed his runeblade on his back. “You’re my cover. I’m hunting ferals tonight.”\n",

he rumbled. “I… I have a wife and daughter.”

\tThe color drained from Val’s face. “Oh.”

\tThe worgen snorted. “I wanted to go home before, and leave the path of the death knight forever. This experience has taught me that I can’t abandon who I am any more than I can change the past. It catches up to you no matter what. I don’t think they’d accept me anyway, if they’re even still alive fifteen years later. I died hoping that my sacrifice would keep them safe, but… traveling all that way to find them dead might do me in for good.”

\tVal searched his eyes carefully. “But… wouldn’t you rather at least know?”

\tHe scoffed. “My daughter was only three when I died. I bet she doesn’t even remember me anymore. And, well…” he paused to place a hand over his breastplate, emphasizing the scar beneath it. “… the living don’t exactly appreciate my unusual circumstances, blood or not.”

\t”Well… I do,” she confessed and placed her hand over his, smiling. Her heart quietly broke for the man she’d come to care for. “Your future is yours to make, whatever you decide… but I wanna be there to see it.”

\tThe worgen let out a soft laugh. “After the hell I’ve put you through?”

\t”Pssh! Excitement follows you, Bob! I’ve felt more alive around you than before I started sailing. Plus, y’know, the sex is pretty damn good.”

\tThe worgen let out a full-on belly laugh at this and squeezed his lover’s hand. “Alright, alright, fair. You’ve convinced me. But my name’s not Bob, and I low key hated it from the beginning.”

\tVal laughed in return. “Fair’s fair! What is your name anyway, big guy?”

\tThe worgen bowed his head respectfully. “Warren Romoson, at your service.”

<Two Years Later>

\t”Boy that kingdom really shot up like a weed outta nowhere,” Val remarked and put down her binoculars. “Maybe we should go in sometime? Could be fun to buy things like we normies used to instead of foragin’ for everything.”

\tWarren chuckled. “Not on your life. I’m not saying they shouldn’t’ve come, but I’m not real keen on how much of our hunting grounds they’ve taken up with them walls. The ferals are getting aggressive because of it.”

\tVal nodded and shrugged, then gently rested her back against his, The two of them were seated upon a small nook high enough in the northern mountains to get a decent view of most of Grizzly Hills. A cave in the mountains had been their home for the past two years, and Warren had chosen to keep a particularly close eye on the local worgen population. “Well, maybe we should consider paring them down a bit? Wouldn’t take much for us.”

\t”As good of a shot as you are, I’d rather we stay in the shadows, luv. The less we’re seen, the better.”

\tVal stuck out her tongue and blew a raspberry. “Party pooper. But you’ve kept me alive this long, I s’pose you’ve got a point.”

\tWarren shrugged. The taller of the two was far more silver-furred than Warren recalled, but that eyepatch was unmistakable.

\tVal squinted to try and watch with him. “I can’t see a damn thing, what is it?! They alive?”

\t”They are,” he said quietly. “One of them… he’s my father-in-law.”

\t”You’re shittin’ me!?” Val said in shock.

\t”Not a bit.” Warren watched the worgen take their human forms as a second trio fell through the same portal. He’s not really all that fond of conflict, so… something must have really agitated him.”

\tVal puffed out her cheeks and nudged him firmly. “Then maybe he could use some help from a friendly face, hmm?” Despite their enduring relationship, Val consistently tried to encourage Warren to seek out his family, though she hadn’t had much luck persuading him after two years.

\tAnd this instance was no different. “No. No need to stir the pot. Let the sleeping dogs lie.”

\t“Ironic,” Val groaned and planted her chin in one hand.

* * * * *

\tEven though Warren had dismissed it, the death knight had chosen to keep watch over the group throughout the night and the next day. Things only went from bad to worse for them, and when he saw Carson get carried away by the pack of ferals, Warren nearly crushed the binoculars in one hand. “Val, get your boomstick.”

\t“Already got it,” she said excitedly. “Change your mind?”

\t”No, we keep to the shadows,” he insisted and sheathed his runeblade on his back. “You’re my cover. I’m hunting ferals tonight.”
",
