Sometimes, you realize that ya don't really know your own parents all that well.  They lived a whole life before ya came along.  It just so happened that Vivine was quite the resourceful one.

You have no idea what kinds of things I had to do to make end’s meet.”\n\n“Unsavory things?” Athilis prodded teasingly.\n\n“That depends on how one defines ‘unsavory’,” she insisted and poured herself a second glass of wine, while offering the rest of the bottle to Athilis. “Shattrath was its own kind of unsavory, for example.”\n\nBoth mother and son cringed at the mention of Shattrath, but Athilis chose not to acknowledge the remark. The monk shrugged. “I’ve seen a lot of weird things when peering into the void. Unless it’s got multiple mouths and tentacles for miles, I wouldn’t judge much of anything else as unsavory.”\n\nVivine took a long sip from her glass, contemplating how much she should really be saying. “Well… you’re not the little boy I raised anymore,” she admitted with some reluctance. “Back in my hayday, I was the Scourge of Silvermoon. N-not the [i]actual[/i] Scourge, of course! But the nickname was pretty bad [i]because[/i] of the Scourge. I knew every connection below Silvermoon’s streets, and I knew how to twist all their arms like it was second nature.”\n\nAthilis cocked an intrigued eyebrow. “You were a criminal? I always thought you worked with Kael’Thas as an informant?”\n\nVivine waved that way as she took another drink. “No, no! Well, yes, but I didn’t start that until late. Thankfully I got out of that mess and settled down before he went all bat-shit crazy… not that he wasn’t [i]always[/i] kind of crazy.”\n\nAthilis chuckled at hearing his mother swear. “Fair. But what [i]did[/i] you do then?”\n\nAnother moment of pause. “I shouldn’t be telling you this.”\n\n”You don’t have to,” he assured her despite his burning curiosity.\n\nVivine shook her head. “I haven’t had anyone to talk to about this sort of thing since your father died. We were exchanging… information, when a small group of guards stormed in. Everyone was arrested for various reasons -we had all been in trouble to some degree before- but the guard who had shackled me kept me behind. Vivine began to tear up at this, and Athilis immediately hopped over to her sofa and wrapped his arms around her shoulders.

The blood elf matron rested her head on her son’s broad shoulder.  “Do you think less of me now, Athilis?”

“Less of you?” Athilis returned incredulously.  “I think you’re stronger than I ever realized, Mom.  I just… feel bad that you had to go through all of that.”

“Well… there were fellow rogues who had it much harder,” she admitted.  “I… in a way I liked it, but I can only ever speak for myself in that way.  There was power involved.  The moment a man made his choice, no matter how awful it may have been in the moment, I knew that gave me leverage to ruin him.”

“I’ll remember that,” Athilis added with a chuckle, though he wasn’t observant enough to notice his mother’s blush.  “Were there women guards who did that, too?”
