"writing": "<4>\n\nThe fun part of the perpetual springtime in Eversong was the reasonably good weather and warm temperatures that offered comfort to its denizens. The nasty part was that the grass grew like crazy, and would overgrow if left unchecked. This is when Athilis’ heart fell into his gut, as the backyard looked like it belonged in Feralas or Gorgrond instead of Eversong. An ornate fence cordoned off a large expanse of once-tidy grass, all of which was nearly as tall as Athilis was.\n\nThe monk stood and stared at it with dread, while his mother stood a few steps back from him, sipping her cup of kafa. “Take a break whenever you need it, dear. I’m going into town for a bit. I’ll be back later.”\n\nAs Vivine walked away, Athilis pulled off his shirt and waited. As soon as his mother had left the house and headed for Silvermoon, he went back in and grabbed a pair of tri-bladed fist weapons that crackled with electricity. In a blur of motion he attacked the yard as if it were his mortal enemy, his bladed fists slicing through the grass as if it hadn’t been there at all. He even practiced many of his forms, slicing whatever grass happened to be in his way.\n\nLess than an hour later, the grass was at a far more manageable height for their bladed pusher to handle. Once he was finished, the yard looked nearly pristine. There was even a cooking pit and a swimming pool hidden among the weeds, the latter of which Athilis had completely forgotten about. The pool itself was oblong with curves where there should have been corners, but it looked like it hadn’t been in use for years. Taking the initiative, he yanked the cover off to find the pool disappointingly empty, and extremely filthy.\n\nLater that afternoon, Vivine came trotting up on her white-feathered hawkstrider with several bags in hand. A svelte, red top and matching ankle-length skirt hugged her hips and chest nicely, and she wore them well even with the slight cushion around her midriff. The wide-brimmed, gold-and-red sun hat was far more striking anyway. “Yoohoo!” she chirped as she walked around behind the house. “Wow! The yard looks wonderful! Thank you!”\n\nAthilis was down in the pool at the time, scrubbing away at the ornate tiles. He only had about an eighth of the pool clean, but he seemed nonplussed by the work. He looked up and smiled. “Nothing to it. It was kinda fun, in a way,” he admitted and nimbly climbed out onto the soft grass. “I thought the pool could use some work too.”\n\nVivine was all smiles. “Well I’d say you’ve earned your keep for today. C’mon, supper’s not far off.”\n\n* * * * *\n\nAthilis almost felt like a kid again. Watching his mother cook and chat while he lounged about their living room had a familiarity to it unlike anything so far. Vivine’s jokes weren’t any better than they used to be, but they hit him differently as an adult, and he actually laughed at a few of them. Occasionally, however, he’d glance down at his purple-hued skin and remind himself of his own folly, but looking back up at his beautiful mother pulled him out of his funk every time. She acted like she didn’t notice it, but Athilis knew better. Occasionally he’d look up at her and remember how she’d looked that morning, but the second he started to picture it again, his body began to react, and loose shorts weren’t ideal for entertaining such thoughts.\n\nSupper came and went, and both of them ended up continuing their chat in the living room after their meal, this time including a bottle of wine Vivine had picked up that day. After a glass of liquid courage, Vivine let the conversation die for a few moments, and with a deep breath she spoke again. “Honey… why are you here?”\n\nThis caught Athilis off guard. “What do you mean? I just… thought i’d come to visi-”\n\n“If this were just a visit, I don’t think you’d have agreed to stay so readily. I didn’t ask at first because it didn’t matter, but now, I’d like to know.” her bright green eyes looked straight into his. “Please tell me the truth, Athilis. I don’t want to have to ask twice.”\n\nPart of him knew this was coming eventually, but their rapport had lulled him into a false sense of security. He took a deep breath, then met her gaze. “Yeah… I screwed up again,” he confessed. “So, while I was studying in Stormwind, I picked up jewelcrafting on the side for a little extra gold. It was good money, and I got really good at gemcutting for a while. I started making a few pieces for some of the others who were studying, until one of them wanted a specific piece for a ritual he wanted to try. I made the piece, but… the gem I used was a fake. I didn’t do it intentionally, but I should’ve known better when I made it. My source for gems was starting to cut corners I guess. It caused the ritual to backfire pretty badly, and as a result… they kicked me out.”\n\nVivine studied her son’s face intently for a quiet moment. “Athilis… why do you consistently choose to cut corners like that?”\n\nAthilis went wide-eyed. “What do you mean?”\n\nVivine scoffed. “I can see it in your eyes, honey. You knew it was fake when you cut it.”\n\nThe monk looked down at the floor… and sighed in defeat. “I did.”\n\nThe retired rogue’s gaze turned from fierce to incredibly sad. “Sweetheart… you cannot keep constantly cutting corners like this. Taking the easy way out is why you ran from home in the first place, and now it’s why you’re back. I thought I taught you better than that.”\n\nThat disappointed stare was almost worse. “Well… don’t tell me you never cut any corners when you worked,” he dared to shoot back, albeit gently.\n",
