Family Reunion: Prologue by BangBear Joanna heard a car pull into the driveway and perked up from her tablet. She leaned to get a better look out the window and lit up when she saw her husband’s car pull in. “They’re here!” she called into the house as she got up from her seat on the couch and set her book on the coffee table. “Coming!” Trevor returned, emerging from his room and hobbling down the stairs to the entryway. The key tumbled the lock on the door as Trevor stepped next to his mom. The knob turned, and Harrison stepped in. “Welcome ba-whoa!” Before she could finish her greeting, Harrison stepped in and scooped her up, into her arms and dipped her down to give her a long overdue kiss hello. She held onto him as they continued, Alissa walking in past him. She was hunched over slightly faced her brother, also hunched over. “What happened to you?” they asked each other at the same time, then pointed at each other accusingly. “Mom tugged my balls and made me nut my soul out,” Trevor started. “Dad spanked my ass on the highway so hard I came in my underwear,” she responded. Trevor nodded in acknowledgment to her and they left it at that. Harrison brought their mother back up to her feet swiftly. “Whoo! How long have you been planning that one?” Joanna asked her husband. “It was spur of the moment. Felt like I had to make up for time away.” “Well, there’s still a balance due on your account, but we can settle that after dinner,” she winked. “Yes, ma’am. Come on, you all must be hungry.” He stretched his arms out to guide the family towards the table where Joanna had finished laying out their meal not too long before, all kept warm on the stove and in the oven beforehand. The siblings groaned as they took their seats, still both sore from their dealings with their parents earlier in the day. Harrison served the family their food as Joanna got their drinks from the fridge. The family ate their meal together while chatting about the goings on in their lives. Trevor talking about his classes, Joanna about how the office is going, Alissa about her job, and Harrison about the construction project. “We should be done by the end of the year. Alissa and I will be able to move back home once that’s done,” Harrison explained, taking another bite of chicken. “By ‘end of the year’, is that Christmas, or Thanksgiving?” Joanna asked. “Thanksgiving, at the current pace. But you know how these things go,” he said, gesturing vaguely. “Fingers crossed,” his wife added, crossing her index over her middle finger. “You miss having us here? Bet the extra space is nice,” Alissa asked her mother, her head propped up on her hand as she twiddled her fork in her food. “Oh, please, there’s much too much house for one person here. I’m just happy I get to enjoy dinner with you all here again.” Alissa smiled and returned her eyes to her food. The family continued chatting and eating until they all had their fill, then rose from their dining table to clean up. The kids handled the dishes while mom and dad wrapped up the leftovers. Not a moment after the last container was placed in the fridge did Harrison take advantage. He wrapped his arms around his wife from behind and held her close, planting a kiss atop her head. She giggled, her hand tracing along his strong arms around her waist. An insistent step forward pressed her up against the fridge door with him leaning against her. “Did you miss me that much?” she asked him coyly. Harrison his head down to whisper into her ear, something only the two of them could hear over the sound of the dishes being organized in the washer. “Yeah? Well you got me all to yourself now.” The older dog smiled and stepped back, then scooped his wife up into his arms and carried her out of the kitchen, Joanna giggling down the hallway. Trevor looked back at them, seeing them disappear up the stairs. “Man, they’re gonna be at it all night,” he said, closing the door on the washer and setting the machine to start its cycle. “Like a 3rd honeymoon.” Alissa leaned against the counter and looked around the house. “It hasn’t really changed much around here, huh? I guess that’s good.” They both sat in silence for a moment, neither having anything to add, and only the noise of the dishwasher taking up the dead air. “...Wanna go up to the roof?” she asked. “Yeah, I’ll get my stuff.” “I already got mine in my pocket ready to go.” “Roger,” he said, “but I still got something else I wanna grab from my room.” He walked down the hall and up the stairs to his room. Alissa followed and waited in the hall. Her brother disappeared from her sight as he dipped into his room. She could hear some rummaging before he came back out and turned the light off. On his way back, Trevor paused and looked at the door to his parents’ room. The nosy dog pressed himself against it carefully with his ear to the door. “Come on, slowpoke,” his sister called, Trevor pulling himself away and heading back down the stairs. He took a detour to the fridge and snagging a six pack of beer before heading through the sliding door. “Isn’t that a lot to sneak?” “That’s a future problem. Plus, it’s a special occasion! What’s a family reunion without drinks?”
