"description": "This took quite a while and I think I learned a lot doing it. I struggled with some parts at first before getting the hang of it. I haven't done much landscape painting at all and most I have done was with watercolor. The contours of the rock began to work out pretty quickly, if not strictly accurate to the reference. The scrubby vegetation on the ground (meant to be low-bush blueberries) worked out nicely. Portraying the distance in a non-transparent medium was a little trickier and took a few tries but when I sketched in the Trapps Ridge (directly behind the bunny's head) the whole thing came together in about two minutes. The shading just fell into place and produced the distinctive curve of the ridge top. I know it well enough to draw it without any reference or even thinking about it. I think the whole thing was a good exercise and came out nicely. \n\nThe progress image starts with a reference photo of the 'Bonticou Dolmen', called [i]Bear Rock[/i] in the story. It's a real rock and most likely intentionally set in place. It and another rock, Reconnoiter Rock, on a mountain miles away are aligned with the winter solstice sunrise and summer solstice sunset. The background is somewhat accurate to what the landscape might look like with thinner tree cover. The recognizable landmarks are actually compressed together. Bonticou Crag (the white rock) and Trapps Ridge wouldn't line up quite that neatly. In the real world time there's a rise in the ground that would get in the way of that nice view.
