The silver chimes indicated the end of class. Lilo rose from her stool and desk, wrestling her wand from the mouth of the Horror that had possessed her desk, then made her way into the hall.
"Be sure to practice your wand work, it's the only way you'll improve!"
"Yes, Ms. Krystal." Came the chorus of students with varying levels of enthusiasm.
The halls bustled with students and faculty of every age and species, size and shape.The blue and silver walls dotted here and there with vibrant, solidly colored crystals growing from crystalized mana ambient in the air of the school. The occasional eye would open from the walls, peer around, then close and vanish. Sparkling summons and familiars darted around above the heads, scampering with task or message in tow.
"Wow! They're so pretty!"
"Thanks! I was trying portal magic and they just started coming in!"
Aelita, an older human girl with pink hair, showed off blue crystals, bold in color and smooth oblong in shape, that formed in both palms and around her right forearm. The stones glowed gently, even under the magical light of the hallways.
"I'm not sure how they work yet, but that's going to be part of the fun!"
Lilo sighed, envious of her older classmate. Lilo sidled past more students, ducked under a tentacle and over a tail.
A purple cat came into view, talking to a blue hedgehog.
"Blaze," Lilo gleefully shouted, running toward the feline.
"There she is!" Blaze's face lit up upon seeing the younger human. She knelt down and scooped Lilo up into a hug. Lilo's arms wrapped Blaze's neck into a tight embrace. Blaze's lilac fur was warmer than usual but just as comforting as always.
"I believe she just finished her first month of school, didn't she, Blaze?" The hedgehog put a theatric flare into his words, treating the benchmark like a real accomplishment.
"Why, I do believe you are correct, Sonic!" Blaze returned the miniature celebration before pulling Lilo away and looking at her adoptive little sister. "So, how does it feel?"
"I'm still having trouble with magic," Lilo said. She hated to put her trouble out there, especially like this, but she didn't want to lie to her kitty sister.
"Oh, it's okay," Blaze comforted, her big yellow eyes smiling back. "You've gotten so good at the levitation spells, the rest will come in time."
"Everyone knows the levitation spells," Lilo giggled. A tentacle extended from the wall and began tugging at Sonic's quills, causing Lilo to giggle harder.
"Everyone starts with the levitation spells," Blaze corrected."You are exactly where you should be after your first month."
"But other kids are already starting to learn other magic. Aelita's even got a blessing," Lilo said, still distracted by the tentacle lifting Sonic from the floor.
"Aelita is five grades above you," Blaze said. "Don't rush."
"Could you teach me a fire spell?" Lilo finally looked Blaze square in the eyes, smiling and imagining her own eyes sparkled.
"My fire works a little differently than the fire magic they teach here," Blaze said. "But, if you want, I can try and help you later tonight."
"Really?" Lilo's eyes actually began to sparkle along with her own beaming smile.
"Sure," Blaze smiled back, touching her nose to Lilo's. "After I'm done helping in the library, I'll swing by your dorm and we can try out a simple torch spell. How does that sound?"
"Eeeee! Thank you, thank you!" Lilo hugged Blaze again.
"Okay, okay!" Blaze lowered Lilo back to the floor. "Later, though. I need to get to the library. Coming, Sonic?"
"Sorry, but I think Amy wants to try some divination on me," Sonic said, turning away from his tense rock-paper-scissors battle with the tentacle. "I just know she's going to try something."
"Well... Uh... Be careful?" Blaze tried to make a joke of the situation, but there was only so far one could go with Amy. She turned back to Lilo. "Later?"
"Later!" Blaze kissed Lilo on the head and the younger girl practically skipped away.

Lilo paced around the round room that served as Lilo's main entertainment and study room. The eye glyphs and pink and blue yin-yang shapes of their school's maser decorated the walls. A small collection of books filled a bookcase made from a single piece of pink stone. The blue couch and pink table were both clear, save for a small blue crystal obelisk in the middle of the table. Lilo watched the ticking clock on the wall, measuring the flow of time magic with a mostly steady rhythm.
A knock at the door caused Lilo to launch from the cushions to the door. Blaze scarcely got a greeting to her throat before the human's face buried into her belly.
"Well. Hello to you, too!"
"Sorry," Lilo said, pulling away and blushing. "I'm just real excited to learn actual magic!"
"All magic is actual," Blaze corrected as she followed Lilo inside. "Do you have your wand?" Lilo held her wand aloft with such triumph and pride, Blaze swore she'd pulled it from a stone. "Good! Now, hold your wand with loose grip. You'll want to let the magic flow in."
Lilo did as she was instructed, holding her silver wand loose in her fingers, braced loosely against the palm of her hand.
"When you're first starting out, it will be easier to focus on and image." Blaze lifted one finger between herself and Lilo. A small flame ignited at the tip of her finger. Lilo started, still in awe regardless of how many times she'd seen it. "Focus on the flame. Watch it dance and sway. Watch it's color, feel it's warmth."
Lilo stared, transfixed but focused.
"Now, keep all of those feelings, keep that image, and close your eyes."
Lilo's eyes closed. Despite the darkness, she could vividly see the flame in her imagination.
"Imagine the flame burning. Warming.Lighting." Blaze's instructions were slow and spaced. Her voice, calm and guiding, like a held hand. "Now, make the fire move, side-to-side. Make it grow. Make it shrink."
Lilo's imaginary flame followed suite. The flame swayed, then hopped, then sprouted legs and began to tapdance. The flame changed shape into an adult human woman, vaguely familiar, like a forgotten dream. Her dance involved hip motions, flowing footwork, and deliberate positioning of the hands and arms. A muscle twitched like Lilo's body wanted to remember the dance, but nothing pushed through.
"Imagine all the uses of the flame. Everything it can be. Everything you might will it to be."
The flame became the lighting of wooden torches stuck in sand on a warm tropical island. The fame became a fire in a stone pit on the beach. Two older humans, one of whom was the dancing woman laughed and joked. The woman looked like Lilo but older.
Beside Lilo, a thin green cyclops fumbled with some marshmallows and a large purple creature with four eyes marveled at the simplicity of a stick.
An image of a blue koala like creature smiled at her. She and the creature shared marshmallows. They opened a pack of hotdogs and stuck those on sticks in the fire. In time, she leaned against the creature's fuzzy chest and the two would doze off.
The fire shifted color, turning every color of the spectrum in accelerating speed. The flame changed consistency, becoming almost like liquid smoke as it billowed out, taking up all of Lilo's thoughts, filly the dark.
Lilo held the flame. She held the image of the flame tighter than she ever had before.
"Hold the image of the flame in your mind, now think of your wand."
Lilo's wand warmed in her hand. She visualized the blame at the very tip of her silver implement.
"Slowly, open your eyes."
Lilo's eyes creaked open. The curling wisps of smoke and ember danced from the tip of her wand. Lilo focused, strained her eyes, thought of the flame, her jealously guarded flame. A roaring ball of fire burst into being upon her wand. Lilo yelped in excitement, afraid to look away lest she lose the fire.
"Good job," Blaze beamed. "I'm so proud of you!"
"I wonder if I can do another spell at the same time!" Lilo said, holding a hand out toward a bookcase. "Wingardium leviosa!" Nothing happened.
"That one's not real," Blaze laughed.
