There used to be a world that was the center of technological development for a galaxy-spanning empire. The planet delegated other planets, sometimes whole systems, to developing technologies for specific fields. One system had planets dedicated to all the noble fields: architecture, food production, defense, medicine. To be an engineer on any of those worlds was an honor that brought status with the assignment to the engineer and their family.
Off in one corner of the system, politely ignored and never mentioned, was a world dedicated to leisure. Generally seen as a waste, the empire still knew it needed things to bring some form of joy lest their populations become unproductive. To be an engineer on this development world was less than ideal. The scientists could not brag about their achievements nor could they hold their title as anything more than a cheap punchline. They were a joke and they knew it.
Still, they did their work.
One team had developed a strange rubber that emulated the movement of muscle. Theoretically it could be used to assist in healing broken bones, possibly even replacing lost limbs. Had the technology been developed on a medical world, it would have made headlines.
Another team developed an empathic sensor, able to read the electrical and chemical signals of the body and brain and accurately diagnose and treat mental illness and trauma. Similar sensors already existed, but none could combine bodily and neurochemical analyses to this extent. Alas, the world of origin lead to this breakthrough also being ignored.
A third team developed a matter converter able to change one substance to another. It would have revolutionized production, had it been on any other world. But, once again, it had been ignored.
After years of such quiet humiliations, several scientists started trying to combine things, knowing whatever they developed would be ignored or dismissed anyway. They took an artificial intelligence model used in hospitality and tweaked its behaviors to focus on sexuality and intimacy. They made a body from the muscle rubber, gave it the sensory organs of the diagnostic machine, and gave it the matter converter to be able to repair itself and generate a lubricant naturally. Latey accessed the material storage and set to work on a "surprise" for his creators. When it was ready, he held a show for all the staff of the lab that birthed him.
