"Well, from how you're describing them, I'm pretty sure those strange balls could be darkballs." I said, sighing at the blank look I got. "They were used by early criminals to completly enslave a pokemon to the user's will and boost their power exponentially. Last I heard nobody had been able to completly recreate a darkball because of the rarity of certain metals... But you say there were, not only one, but several and that that place was in the process of creating more?" "Yes" Mayhem replied looking hesitant to tell me more about something he didn't want to remember. "As a breeder I'm technically supposed to report all of this to the rangers. But seeing as I don't know if they still exist after everything that's happened, I guess it falls on us as the survivors, to destroy everything related to the creation of the darkballs and the darkballs themselves." I inform them, shaking my head at the rediculousness of the situation. "We should also release any pokemon trapped inside the balls and see if they're able to be remediated from their mindless states. I guess we should do that first-thing tomorrow, weather permitting. Vandal, I'll need you to round up a few pokemon who would be willing to help out." I feel Vandal curl back around me to look up at me from my lap. "What should I tell them about the trip?" "Tell them that we're checking out a place of interest and retrieving supplies from the surrounding buildings" I say and stroke the top of his head. "No need to cause extra alarm within our group." Early the next day, my pokedex's alarm started to ring waking everyone up. Various grumbles alerted me to the fact that none of my pokemon were wanting to be up but kept moving despite this thanks to the urgency. I had informed them of what Mayhem had found in an intact building nearby and they all had eagerly volunteered to go with me. It was a rare chance that we got any time outside a building to walk, or in this case sneak, through actual grass and feel the sunshine on our back. Not to mention they eagerly wanted to train their skills against any unlucky undying that sought to end our lives and conscript us. I quickly turned off the alarm and slunk to the coffee machine I had set to make coffee five minutes before waking us all up in preperation for leaving swiftly. I pour myself a cup and carry it back to to the bedroom where I had set out my clothes for the day. Swiftly pulling on my clothes, I grabbed my translator and pokedex before checking that all my pokemon were ready. Cavan was atop Drisk's head as the gem pokemon swayed in what I hopped was early-morning grogginess and Cyan was itching to be out in the sunlight again. I lead my pokemon through the hall to the trainer accomidations where hopefully Vandal, Mayhem, and whoever else wanted to tag along waited awake in the room from last-night. My luck was holding out as I heard the various mumbling of pokemon from the doorway ahead of me. Entering the door was when my luck ran out, however, I noticed something I should have planned for. I had been washed of the smell of Vandal and my actions the night before but the sheets and matress still gave off a somewhat powerful scent of sex... I half-turned towards Cyan expecting the worst. Her nostrils were flexing like she had caught the scent but she was only smiling eagerly. "Alright, so we have Cyan, Cavan, Drisk, Mayhem, Vandal, Arcanine, and Angel?" I tallied on my hands. "I'm glad that you feel comfortable enough with the situation that you're joining us today Angel. I do believe we will be more than prepared for whatever we might encounter out there. Everyone ready to go?" Everyone nodded to some measure and I said "Alright, let's move out and keep to the buddy-system, Cyan and Angel, Arcanine and Cavan, Drisk and Vandal, Mayhem we're on point and thanks to your scouting we know where we're headed." I turned around and lead the group pokemon to the elevator which took us to the surface. A sunny day outside greeted us and there were none of the deathless in sight from the front-door. We quickly file out before gently closing the gap behind us. It wasn't until we were nearly half-way to the building when the question was finally asked. "Joseph?" The arcanine asked. "I know Vandal told us that we were checking out a point of interest today but he failed to mention what it was exactly." "Ah, oh. Mayhem found something that would have been illegal if the rangers were still alive to deal with it." Angel's head swiveled to listen closer. "It's pre-rocket technology called darkballs." "Ominous" The arcanine said "What is it?" "The darkballs were used to completely enslave any pokemon's will, despite if it had been captured by another trainer already, to the user's will." I informed. "If all goes well, we're going to try to destroy the balls." I heard a meaty smack as one of the deathless toppled off of a building to the street behind us, then a low roar as Angel and the Arcanine set the body ablaze with a flamethrower. Nothing else happened as we walked, each of us absorbed in our own thoughts that it was almost surprising when we got to the building. Like Mayhem had said, the building was nondescript almost camoflaged amidst the buildings to either side of it. One could notice the building was there but not question it later. We all got inside the building rather quickly and then spread out to look for useful documents and data drives. I was sitting next to the incomplete darkball Mayhem had first seen inside reading several documents Angel had brought me. The documents in question only reffered to the darkball simply as "the device" probably to save themselves the trouble of having to explaing themselves if a reporter somehow got into their ranks and snapped a few documents to report to local authorities. It was mostly scientific jargon but a couple notes caught my attention like "Retained intelligence", "Life-locked to the devices", and "Accidentally set to feed on rage to empower other emotions". And an email to a dispoable address thanking the resipient for the test subject. Mayhem startled me by popping through the screen before I could read anymore to tell me that he'd found the entrance to the chamber below. I placed the papers into my bag with what had already been salvaged and called the rest of the group to follow Mayhem downstairs. The entrance to the chamber below was through an elevator but there wasn't a way to get the elevator to stop on that floor without an ID. So I recalled everyone except for Mayhem with the promise to let them all out again when I could. Then I sent the elevator to the floor below and climbed through the maintenance hatch in the roof. Mayhem had already pushed the physical switch to open the doors there was plenty of room to move around. I let the pokemon out of their balls again and aproached the terminals on the pliniths where the balls were stored. I could deffinitely feel the fear Mayhem had described and the lack of light around the balls. One by one, I checked that the terminals noted there were no pokemon inside then had both Angel and Arcanine melt them to slag. The last one, however, did have a pokemon in it and noted that the ball was the first successfull one to incorporate the Life-lock feature to prevent the pokemon's release if the darkball fell into the wrong hands. "We have something here..." I murmered to them "Be ready to fight if it's hostile." The pokemon took various places around the room, Cavan and Mayhem hid behind where I was planning on letting the pokemon out, Angel and Arcanine, Cyan and Drisk standing in a half-circle next to me. I nodded to myself and pressed the button on top of the device and lobbed it into the middle of the room. A red flash of light announced the arival of the darkball's prisoner. "Well, you don't seem like my normal torturers." Said the pokemon, I felt a psichic probe enter my mind and quickly flit through my memories. "No, not a torturer at all. A Licensed Breeder before the end of the world and survivor up to this point at least, acting in the stead of the pokemon rangers." "What kind of pokemon are you? I've never seen your species in the pokedex..." I asked waving to Mayhem and Cavan that it was alright. "Genetically Engineered Clone of legendary pokemon, Mew... I believe my creators called me Mewtwo."
