The heeler loved spending the afternoon out in the wilderness with his family, unable to think of much that would be more relaxing than a few hours of romping through the forest followed by a serene meal surrounded by the idyllic wilds. A few seconds after Bandit had gotten the trunk unpacked, another car pulled alongside the Heeler family, an 11 year old boy jumping out almost as soon as it had come to a stop. The cub ran over to Bandit sporting a bright smile and a wagging tail, stopping just short of hugging the man as he stood at attention, his hands behind his back, \n“Mr. Heeler!”\nBandit chuckled and patted the boy on the head, \n“Hey, Rusty! How’ve you been, kiddo?”\nThe young pup gave a light giggle as the heeler pet him, his leg twitching as the man scratched behind his ear, making the little red kelpie lose his focus for a split second. Rusty’s mom hopped out from the car shortly behind her son, waving at the Heeler family, getting a familiar nod from Bandit as she grabbed her bag, joining the group gathered at the edge of the woods. As the adults chatted, Rusty stayed by Bandit's side the entire time, his tail wagging gently as he stood with his back straight and his ears perked up, his shirt tucked into his shorts. With the boy's father being in the army, Rusty often had long stretches of being alone with just his mom, including for the last few months with the man being out on deployment. The pup didn't mind it too much however, thanks to being able to hang out with the Heeler family almost weekly, especially enjoying the time he got to spend with Bandit, viewing the man like an uncle to him. As the canines all got ready to head into the forest for their afternoon picnic, Rusty stayed by Bandit's side, helping carry some of the gear as the two chatted away. \n\nAfter hiking along the trail for a handful of minutes, finding a nice clearing in the forest that seemed perfect to set up shop, Bandit huffed and set the bags down onto the grass, wiping his brow,\n“I think this ought to be a nice spot to enjoy our sandwiches, right?”\nWith the rest of the canines all nodding in agreement, the group began to unpack their things, settling in to relax and unwind after a busy week at work and at school. Having always been a bit more on the energetic side of things, Rusty wasn't really looking forward to just sitting on his rump, munching on some bread and biscuits, not when he had the entire forest to explore and play in. But since running around in the outdoors was always more fun when not alone, the puppy looked over at the other cubs, just about to ask the kids if they wanted to play with him. Right at that moment however, Chilli called both Bluey and Bingo over to help her with getting their snacks ready, leaving Rusty looking disappointed, kicking rocks as he sighed. Sitting down to wait for the other cubs to finish up helping their mother, the young dog idly fiddled with his tail, looking bored until he suddenly noticed a shadow looming over him. Glancing over his shoulder, the boy saw Bandit smiling down at him, \n“What's got you looking so blue, mate?”\nRusty nodded towards the man's kids, \n“I wanted to go play in the forest, but they're too busy helping their mum.”\nBandit hummed as he rubbed his cheek, \n“Well that's no good, kiddo. And I bet’cha that you wouldn't wanna race me to the edge of the clearing either, since you're too busy moping about, right?”\nImmediately perking up at the challenge, the pup's bored frown turned into an excited smile as he jumped up to his feet, his tail wagging as he brushed the grass off of his shorts, \n“You're on!”\nGrinning, Bandit lined up with the boy, stretching before getting ready for a sprint, \n“Alright, on your mark, get ready…”\nBreaking into a jog, the man laughed and looked over his shoulder, \n“Go!”\nWith a groan, Rusty sprinted after the man, \n“Oi! False start, no fair!”\nThe older heeler just laughed, deliberately letting the cub catch up to him, \n“What's that? Can't hear you over all of my dust that you're eating~”\nWith a competitive grin, Rusty dashed straight past the man, the pair laughing as they sprinted into the woods, disappearing out of sight of the other canines left behind in the clearing. \n\nFor nearly half an hour, Bandit and Rusty ran all around the woods, laughing as they chased one another. Going from racing, to tag, and finally to a quick game of hide and seek, the man was left rather winded and sweaty by the time he stopped, grabbing his knees and panting. Taking a deep breath, Bandit wafted his shirt for a little breeze while looking around, holding up a hand to signal for the giggling cub to stop, \n“Alright mate, slow down, you win this round.”\nRusty smiled brightly as he circled around to return to Bandit, equally as winded and sweaty as he stopped right alongside the man, the pair both huffing and puffing as Bandit patted him on the shoulder, \n“Let's take a little breather here, kiddo, we both earned it after all that running about.”\nOut of eyesight of the rest of the group, unable to even see the clearing the others were gathered at, the two males shuffled into the shade of a large tree, sitting down side by side by the base of it.
