"writing": "The Diary Of Princess Nedjes-Moswenkiya\na historical artifact by Alex Reynard\n\n~~~~~\n\n\nTranslator's notes:\n The following words represent my humble attempt to transcribe, in simple English, a befuddling curiosity that has been circulating amongst us Egyptologists for a considerable time since its discovery.\n Four sheets of papyrus, taken from the archives of Pharaoh Usitor's trusted scribe, Wamukota. The mystery lies not in their authenticity, but their content. For many decades, these simple sheets caused much uproar. They were considered forgeries at worst, strange fiction at best. The events described, especially in the third and fourth papyri, simply could not be considered as true. But recent digs have unearthed evidence that seemingly confirm the fate of Usitor and Queen Umm-Akila's daughter. Those elements of this queer document that could potentially be proven, have been. And while some stubborn traditionalists continue to insist upon Sir Drombridge's explanation of a sudden illness, the long-awaited discovery of the young Princess' tomb has laid some questions to rest, while raising just as many others. There, before the eyes of Sandford's expedition, lay the mummified remains of the two servant boys. Just as Wamukota described. There, upon the breast of the preserved Princess, is the weird wound. Just as Wamukota described. And while it is nigh-impossible for men of science to consider literally the prospect that Usitor's long reign of unparalleled vigor and healthfulness is the result of a deal with his deity, the explanation given within the papyri matches up with true life events uncannily enough to give one pause.\n Further note: as Nedjes-Moswenkiya was but ten years old upon her passing, I have attempted to recreate the voice of a young girl for this translation. I have no scientific ambition in mind for this task. This is merely a labor born of an idle and meddlesome muse. Truth or fiction, the story fascinates me for its own reasons.\n -James Silksmith, Cairo\n\n~~~~~\n\n\n-FIRST PAPYRUS-\n\n\nTwo more days! Two more wonderful days!\n\nIt's hard to believe it's been a full year since Seer Yahya's vision. So much has happened since then. At first it seemed like the day of my sacrifice would never come. Now suddenly, it is nearly upon me! I have so much left to do in my little time left. But this is most important. I asked Mama to grant me an audience with Scribe Wamukota so I could leave a record of my last days. I want all of Egypt to know I am facing the altar willingly, with nothing but joy in my heart!\n\nI remember the exact morning when Yahya, drenched in sweat and babbling, burst into Papa's dining chamber. Papa has a temper at mealtimes and I've seen him order those who interrupt his meals to serve a week's duty scrubbing the royal toilets. But Yahya was insistent. He had received his clearest vision ever: a message from Anubis himself!\n\nThat got our attention! Being jackals ourselves, our family has always known Anubis favors us. But now, according to Yahya, he was saying so directly. The fitful petrel described to us a dream he had just awoken from:\n\nAnubis had summoned Yahya to his palace, and there had given him an offer to pass on to Papa. He'd said there was a certain white-furred jackaless he had need of in the afterworld. If the arrangement was accepted, the white jackal's heartsblood would be spilled into a golden bowl. Each person who then dipped their finger into the blood would be granted a long life free of serious illness or injury.\n\nI was stunned as I listened! For surely, there is only one albino female jackal in all of Egypt, and it is me. I felt both terrified and starstruck. The great and mighty god of death wanted *me*? How could I possibly be special?\n\nPapa was fearsomely angry at first. Understandably so! He loves me so much, he said, he could never bring himself to end my life because of a single dream. Yahya begged and blubbered for Papa to show mercy. He was only relaying the message he'd been given, he said, his feathers falling all over our dining table. Mama could see Papa was almost ready to order Yahya's execution, but suggested simply confining him instead. Maybe he simply has a fever and is imagining things, she said.\n\nPapa yells a lot and acts fierce, but he's never truly cruel. He agreed to Mama's suggestion and told the guards to keep Yahya under observation for a few days. If the petrel hadn't proven his worth to us with all his other divinations, I think Papa might have banished him to the desert instead.\n\nBut then, the very next day, a messenger arrived from Hardai, saying that he had ridden all night to tell of a wondrous prophecy that had been made to a local wisewoman. Another message from Anubis! The same request Yahya had described, to the letter!\n\nWell! Papa certainly apologized to Yahya in a hurry!\n\nIt was decided then: I would be given to Anubis in nearly one years' time, upon the day of his feast.\n\nI was very afraid for a while. Naturally so. Who wouldn't be? Even if it meant glory in the afterworld, I would be facing a very painful end with a sharp blade driven into my poor heart. It also meant losing my Mama, Papa, my home, my friends, and all the beloved citizens I'd hoped to rule someday. Thankfully though, as soon as I told them the news, Kafele and Abayomi nearly fought to be first to pledge their lives to me.\n\nKa and Omi are the best servants a princess could ever hope for. It is partly for them that I write this down. They have been such devoted friends, I want to be sure that their names are remembered for as long as Papa's. Nowhere in Egypt can anyone find two mice more devoted to their duty. By chance or grace, they were born the same month as I, to two of our most loyal servant families. It was decided that they would be groomed to be my personal attendants. All three of us enjoy the arrangement very much. The boys are always at my side to cheer me up, draw my bath, bring me meals, share a joke, or help me get away with mischief!\n\nKnowing that they had vowed without hesitation to join me in my fate made me feel much better. I am sure Aaru is a beautiful afterworld, but even our palace is cold when I am alone in it. I know there is supposed to be decorum between royalty and slave, but I gave both boys many hugs and kisses to thank them for their devotedness!\n\nSince then, I have become happier and happier as I await my moment of glory. I think of the faces of the peasants who Papa grants an audience to. Their eyes sparkle with disbelief that they are sharing the air with the ruler of all Egypt. As Princess, our status and luxury feels humdrum at times. But to meet with a God! To be chosen personally! I am certain I will stutter and blush in his presence just as much as any peasant. (Even though Mama has been giving me lessons on the proper etiquette for meeting deities.)\n\nPlus, the wait itself has been a happy one. When news of Anubis' offer reached the populace, it seemed as if everyone in the world came to see me and wish me well. Travelers even from far beyond the Nile have arrived! Although that may have as much to do with me as the festivals Papa has been arranging. Smells of good food and celebratory songs fill the air in every city we travel to. I have tasted foods so dazzling to my tongue they seem like magic! I have seen colors, dances and sorcery the likes of which I couldn't hope to describe! There are even dolls of me that the peasant children play with. The very thought makes me giggle bashfully!\n\nPlanning my funeral was an unexpected joy too. Papa at first wanted to commission a pyramid for my resting place to rival even Khufu's. But I talked him out of it. Silly Papa! Such extravagance would only embarrass me! I told him I would be perfectly happy with a modest tomb, so long as it contained my favorite things. So, while Papa has busied himself commissioning the tomb itself, Mama and I have busied ourselves deciding how to fill it.\n\nIt's strange to see my bedchamber and playroom so empty today, but I know all my possessions are safe and sound under the sand, where I'll soon be too. Mama and I oversaw the men moving everything to the tomb, and Ka and Omi helped me arrange everything just so. The portrait of Mama and Papa I asked for is even more beautiful than I'd dreamt of. The artists have filled every inch of wall with even more portraits and stories. My mice and I even took turns drawing each other in one corner! But the best part was sitting for the sculptress Tabia. I had to keep very still the whole time, but it was fascinating watching her shape my face from clay, and then to gold, for my sarcophagus. It gleams so brilliantly! Adorned with turquoise chips as blue as if they were carved from the sky, and even pink coral to match my eyes! I couldn't be happier with it. I even got to lie down inside it to make sure it was comfortable enough. It certainly is. My body will rest quite peacefully here while I go on to meet the pantheon.\n\nBut of all the wonderful things that have happened since Yahya's vision, the best has been a gift, not to myself, but to Mama and Papa. A son! All the doctors and priests have confirmed it, and Mama's tummy is even starting to display roundness. In the past months, Papa had been doing his best to be supportive of me and show me all the love in the world, though I could still see disappointment and worry in his eyes at times when he thought I wasn't watching. I understood perfectly well. With me gone, who would ascend the throne? Yet Bastet seems to have smiled upon us now. A new little brother is coming. I'm a bit sad I won't get to meet him in person, but sometimes I hold Mama's belly and whisper to him, telling him to be as wise a prince as I had planned to be a princess.\n\nThat's enough for today. Dinnertime is soon, and I'm sure I will have more to say tomorrow! Thank you, Wamukota!\n\n\n*****\n\n\n-PAPYRUS TWO-\n\n\nThe sacrifice is tonight! I am so full of anticipation, I feel as though lightning sizzles inside my fur! My heart flutters fast, eager for the blade. My tail hasn't stopped wagging all day! All of Egypt celebrates outside our palace. Even in this inner chamber I can hear the thrum of music and singing through the walls. I hope I will put on a good show.\n\nKafele and Abayomi were at my bedside this morning, each shaking an arm to wake me up. They'd brought me a lovely breakfast and I couldn't bear to send them away while I ate it. Decorum is unimportant today. I shared everything with them. Both the food and my feelings. Snuggled in my silk blankets, we held each other and bared everything we were feeling. We were no longer princess and servants: we were three overwhelmed children who needed each other. All our joys, all our worries came out. We all cried. Afterwards, my heart felt light as a feather. I hugged them both and told them I was no longer afraid of anything so long as I had them by my side.\n\nThey attended my fur for the last time, placing every last tuft perfectly. After that, I dismissed them to their own activities for the day. I can spend an afternoon taking care of myself; I'm not helpless. Besides, it was important for me to spend my last hours with my parents, so I know Ka and Omi would feel the same. Mama had given both their families the week off too, she said.\n\nThere was a big breakfast banquet to attend (which was a little boring but at least the food was yummy). Governors and dignitaries from Egypt and beyond all made speeches and wished me well. Papa kept teasing me by tickling my paws under the table when I was supposed to be keeping stoic and royal!\n\nLater, Tabia arrived to show off my finished Canopic jars. I've always thought they looked cute, like little dolls. It's strange to think that by tonight they will hold my lungs, liver, stomach and intestines. Tabia wanted to make sure the designs met with my approval. They certainly did; the head of Duamutef even looked a bit like Uncle Abubakar. I signed each one with a pawprint.\n\nI asked Papa and Mama if we could walk through the gardens one last time. It was a beautiful warm afternoon. We remembered all our best memories. Papa promised Egypt would never forget me, not for a thousand generations. I told him I would do my very best to be polite to all the Gods and make him proud. Later we toured the marketplace and I was swarmed by grateful citizens. Papa and the bodyguards were wary, but I let anyone who wanted to touch me do so. My paws were kissed and I got many hugs. Ladies put flowers in my hair. Many people offered me gifts, which I graciously accepted. Poor Nizam had quite a load to carry back for us! I have no need of these toys and trinkets so I will ask Papa to give them to peasant children when I am gone.\n\nWe had an early dinner so the priests could prepare me for tonight's ritual. They led me to a dim, pleasant-smelling chamber where I was laid on a table upon soft cloth. Four women cleaned me gently from toe to eartip. Quite relaxing! I asked where Omi and Ka were and Sekhemib told me they were being prepared in another room. I asked that they join me so we could enjoy the experience together. He was a bit flustered (he's always been stuffy about doing everything just so!) but I'm the princess so I got my way. Soon the boys were lying beside me and we could hold hands as we were purified. Plus, I was able to peek a few times and see their little snakes!\n\nThe ritual continued with strange smoke fanned onto us. It smelled nice but made me sneeze. Then our fur was painted with kohl and gold and henna. Very tickly! I did my best to not be squirmy as the attendants drew their designs with tiny brushes. The boys were fitted with jewelry and ceremonial hats. I was given a beautiful black and silver dress that shimmered like the night sky. It's so pretty I asked that it be placed in my tomb with my other clothes, even if it does get a bit stained during the ceremony.\n\nThat brings us to now, Wamukota. I request that you be by my side during the ritual to record my final thoughts. Thank you for all your many years of service to me and my family.\n\n{Here, the dear princess stood and kissed my old bald head. She is a gem. As queen, she would have been wise and generous beyond measure. I understand completely why Anubis is so eager to meet her.}\n\n{I followed Nedjes-Moswenkiya to the palace balcony. Outside, many thousands of citizens had gathered, and their cheer when the Pharaoh's family emerged nearly struck me deaf! These donkey's ears have grown overly sensitive in my old age. Innumerable torches turned the darkness of night into day. The colors dazzled. The sheer presence of the assembled crowd could be felt as if its own elemental force.}\n\n{My Pharaoh made a long speech and the crowd silenced for him. Princess Moswenkiya was fidgeting with anticipation, her smile as broad as the Nile. Another cheer came when she stood up and addressed the people. She pledged her love and loyalty to all, and said she had imperforate faith that Anubis would fulfill his promise. She said she was glad to give her life to her people. I can see the populace's love for her in every pair of eyes.}\n\n{Sekhemib and his priests entered, followed by servants carrying the golden bowl. I saw the little princess gulp at it, and her mother then reassured her with a hug. Sekhemib, that old ham, could not resist a speech of his own. He droned on for twice the length of the Pharaoh and Princesses's speeches combined. I am surprised anyone in the crowd remained awake by the end.}\n\n{Finally though, Moswenkiya gives her parents a last hug. She even made a point of trotting over to where her housemice were saying their own familial goodbyes, to gratefully embrace their parents as well. After that, the three children approached the altar; paw in paw in paw. You would think the trio were siblings.}\n\n{As the princess watched, her beloved servants met their ends. The two boys very bravely ascended the steps and were cheered by the people. I could see their blushes from where I sat. The executioners offered the boys the option of strangling or poison. The mice seemed to have discussed this at length beforehand, as they both asked for the noose with one voice, saying it would be more entertaining for the crowd.}\n\n{With confidence, the boys met their destinies and slipped the ropes around their necks by their own paws. They bowed to the Pharaoh, to the Queen, to the people, then blew kisses to the Princess. Side by side, they stepped off the stone and plummeted. A short drop, their necks stretch, and they began their fatal sway.}\n\nI am filled with sadness, excitement and pride, Wamukota! My dear servants are so brave! They smile even now! Look how they kick and dance! I almost envy them. I am sure there must be pain, but they seem almost to be enjoying themselves. ...Oh!\n\n{The princess's cheeks are now as red as rouge. She has noticed the boys' loincloths. I tell her this is a perfectly ordinary consequence of hanging. She cannot take her eyes away.}\n\n{Kafele and Abayomi seem to be in competition with each other to see who can survive the longest. To my surprise, it is Abayomi who perishes first, and quite suddenly too. His companion smiles triumphantly and allows himself to relax. Then both boys are still, their only motion caused by the night's breeze.}\n\n{The crowd cheers ear-splittingly again. Priests lower the boys down with utmost gentleness. Princess Moswenkiya touches both their foreheads and whispers to them.}\n\nI told them that I'll be right there with them soon. It's a shivery feeling to see them lying so still, knowing that theirs will be my fate too in just a moment. But mine will be more painful, won't it?\n\n{I reassure her with a gentle pat, just as I spot Tumaini arriving with the elixir. I overheard his discussion with Usitor earlier: it is new medicine from the finest scientific minds of the West. More powerful than any pain-relieving serum yet developed. The princess is very grateful for this, and gulps the violet liquid down. She says it tastes of mulberries.}\n\n{The princess says she can feel the potion tingling in her pawpads and tail, and is ready to face her fate. Many more loud hurrahs as she ascends towards the golden bowl. Naturally, Sekhemib must make another speech. There shall be no rest for my ears this night! As he drones, Moswenkiya casts farewell glances to her mother and father. But when Sekhemib finishes, the princess' face is as resolute a portrait of courage as I have ever seen.}\n\nLet all the people know that I feel honored and joyous to accept this offer from mighty Anubis!\n\n{She steps up to the bowl and two strong servants hold her arms out. Sekhemib exposes her chest. The folds of her dress dance in the breeze. Her white fur shines like a second moon. Badru brings the knife. It has been specially crafted with great care: a tube runs from tip to hilt, so the princess' blood may flow like a fountain.}\n\n{Sekhemib lets Anubis know that the time is now. He places his hand on Moswenkiya's forehead to comfort her. The princess closes her eyes.}\n\n{The crowd's silence is split by her shriek of pain.}\n\n{Then her heartsblood, each drop like a tiny ruby, leaps from the blade and into the bowl. It is the ideal of red; nothing could be redder. The princess' eyes are wide. There is clearly agony, but she is withstanding it with the strength of a full-grown man. I do not know whether to give credit to the potion or to her will.}\n\nWamukota! The pain! Oh it hurts, it hurts! But it is such a clear, perfect pain! A silver, gleaming pain! It is beautiful in its own way! I know I have only moments left! I am more awake than I have ever been!\n\n{The princess looks down at her own scarlet essence, cascading from her breast in spurts, as her heart pumps its last tortured beats. Each spray darts through the air like fish jumping into a pond. She is awed by the sight. I can see redness reflected in her eyes. I can see her paws and legs tremble. I can see her breath flutter.}\n\nI'm not afraid! This is what my whole life has been for. I give my life to my people. If I cannot be queen, I will give you my life and health instead of my rule. I love you all!\n\n{The people cheer!}\n\nI can feel my fingers and toes going numb, Wamukota. I'll be over soon. I'm truly unafraid. Even as my skin grows cold, I feel a warmth from the other side. I can see lights! They're dancing, and so many colors! I'm going to meet Anubis, I really am! I'm so happy!\n\n{The princess' voice wavers, but only from physical weakness. Her spirit is completely resolute. Could even the mightiest Pharaohs and generals of the past face death with such passionate welcome?}\n\n{Her eyes focus on a point beyond the crowd now, somewhere far off in the night sky. Her leaps of blood have grown smaller. She is down to her last drops. Her eyes are wide as twin moons.}\n\nI can see!\n\n{Her body shudders; spasms. The crowd of thousands makes not even the sound of breath. The last ruby sparkles drip from the hilt of the knife.}\n\nANUBIS!!\n\n{This is Princess Moswenkiya's last word. She shouts it with a strength that should be impossible for her tiny, emptied body. Her face erupts into joy, then goes suddenly slack. In an instant her body has gone from rigid to limp. She slumps in the arms of the servants, no more animate than a doll.}\n\n{The crowd erupts with joyous noise, and it is all the excuse I need to ask Usitor for permission to escape the din and return to the palace. He grants my request and begins his final speech of the night. He is holding back his tears admirably well.}\n\n{I do not dash to my quarters but instead follow the priests as they bear Moswenkiya to the mummification room. Her eyes are still open as wide as they can be.}\n\n{Did she really see him? Mighty Anubis?}\n\n{I have doubt in my heart sometimes. As scribe, I sometimes see more than I should, including inconsistencies that have made my mind rattle with worry about whether or not the gods truly watch over us. I know I may be banished for writing this, but I care not.}\n\n{Whatever doubts I may have had, I am certain that in her final instant of life, my dear beloved princess had none at all.}\n\n\n*****\n\n\n-PAPYRUS THREE-\n\n\n{I hardly believe myself as I write this inscription. I have awoken from a feverish dream-choked night to find myself sitting upright at my board, quill in hand. The papyrus before me is either the cruelest joke imaginable, played by a servant whose throat I will crush if I ever discover them, or... Or it is a message. Sent from beyond the twilight by our dear princess Nedjes-Moswenkiya!}\n\n\n\nI really did see Anubis! I did!\n\nJust as I was fading away, his face appeared on the moon, more handsome than I'd ever imagined! He gave me a nod of approval just before everything went dark.\n\nI couldn't hear, feel or see anything. There was nothing but infinite blackness and my mind tumbling within it. I'd have been shaking with fear if I'd had anything to shake.\n\nBut then a voice was beside me: a gentle hiss. It was Kebechet! Tell Papa he was right, Wamukota: I remember arguing with him that a jackal couldn't have a snake for a daughter, but a snake she certainly is. And a very compassionate one! At first all I could hear was her voice, but she spoke with me a long while and helped me relax. She said her father was very proud of how brave I was. That made me tingle with pride.\n\nSoon the priests were performing the ceremonies to reawaken my senses. That was a great relief! I could finally see and hear again. It was exciting to view the mummification room from the perspective of the slab. I couldn't move, but I could watch the priests circling my corpse and doing their work. I know that getting purified and wrapped up took a few months, but it only seemed like days to me. It was like floating on the surface of a dream.\n\nBeing dead wasn't as unpleasant as I'd worried. My body seemed to grow numb at the edges, and brittle inside like an old empty bamboo box. It was an unusual, but restful, sensation. You can also inform Papa that everyone did an excellent job taking care of my remains. Very gentle and respectful. Even the antelope fellow who pulled my brains out with a hook! I'd been considerably frightened of that part, ever since I learned of it in school. But it didn't feel painful, just squirmy. Kebechet held my hand and brought me cool water to drink.\n\nShe also helped me talk with Ka and Omi. They're doing fine too. Kebechet told me that, since she is a goddess, she can sit and comfort many, many souls simultaneously. (I was actually quite glad to hear that. I'd been worried I was taking up all of her time!) Through her, my mice and I could relay messages. Omi said he really liked getting to see what all his organs looked like. Wet and slimy and slippery. Ew! Ka said he was amused by how his stiffy wouldn't go down after his death no matter what the priests tried. Naughty mouse!\n\nBeing cut open was surprisingly enjoyable. I felt a wave of shivery calm hit me as the knife went in. Like a water pouch deflating. Each of my organs was removed with reverence. My liver had a particularly pretty hue. Into the Canopic jar it went, safe and sound. Then the priests put all sorts of nice-smelling oils and leaves and salts inside me. It was wonderfully relaxing. Better than the spa treatments Mama and I used to attend. The longer I was dead, the nicer it felt. Like sinking into an endlessly soft bed.\n\nBut the best part was the bandages! Oh, Wamukota! Tell everyone how good it feels so they will look forward to it with great anticipation! The priests started with my hands, feet and tail. The linen was wound around and around and around. So tight, like Mama's hugs. Linen up my arms and up my legs. Even around my girlflower. Warm, soft tightness surrounding my whole body!\n\nThey pulled my limbs and tail tight to my body and added lots more linen. I couldn't move anyway, since my ka was gone, but the bandages made me never *want* to! The priests put some wet stuff over my face to make a cast of it. (It's neat to think that soon there'll be statues around the palace that look just like me!) Then my face and ears were swaddled too. Darkness again. Bliss! I felt so secure in my wrappings. My golden faceplate and decorations were added next and bandaged into place. Quite heavy, but I didn't have the slightest care. Even if there was no afterworld to progress to, I think I would have been perfectly content to stay wrapped up and cozy in my sarcophagus forever. I was bound every inch in soft tightness. Warm, content, and perfectly adrift from the physical world.\n\nI was fully mummified now. After making sure I would be okay on my own, Kebechet left my side and said that she would meet me again soon enough in Duat. I thanked her again and again for her kindness. I used to be afraid of snakes when I was little, but not anymore!\n\nOmi, Ka and I were carried from the mummification chamber in a big parade. By now I had discovered how to 'see' with ghostly sight and had been practicing for a while. When we left the palace, the bright sun was overwhelming after so long a time inside! Nevertheless, I was proud to be at the head of the parade and see all the people gathered for me. Though it hurt my heart to see so many so sad. I wished I could allay their grief by calling out that I was well in spirit. (Pardon my joke!)\n\nI saw you there at the parade, Wamukota. And Mama and Papa. Mama looks like she might give birth to my little brother any day now! Please give him all my best wishes when he arrives.\n\nThe parade went all through the town to my tomb. I was carried down the steps, down deep inside. It was nice to be in dimness again, and to see all my toys and clothes so neatly arranged. And it was even better to see Ka and Omi's coffins laid down beside mine. Side by side by side; my eternal protectors! I couldn't wait to leave my body and be able to hug them again.\n\nThen everyone else went away and it was just Sekhemib and the other priests circling my sarcophagus, speaking quiet words. I felt my soul begin to quiver. Then I began to rise! I floated up out of my bandages, up through the wooden and golden lid. I was a spirit now! A misty trace of my former image, like a smudged charcoal drawing upon the air itself. And my mice were right beside me! They looked spooky in a cute way. We tried to hug, but we were as insubstantial as smoke.\n\nA voice spoke, and a hole opened in reality. Beyond lay the land of the dead. I said goodbye to the priests, to Egypt, to my former life, and passed through.\n\nI was dumbstruck when I first saw Duat. It is similar to our world, but everything is so much *more*! The trees are taller, the animals fiercer, the colors brighter! Kebechet was there waiting for us, and giggled at our wide eyed expressions.\n\nWhen we regained our senses and found we had become once again solid, my mice and I were finally able to hold one another and rejoice that we were together again. Our tails twined and intertwined, and we all shared dozens of kisses. We also showed our gratitude to Kebechet too. And being a snake, her coils give excellent hugs!\n\nThe elegant serpent told us about the road of trials ahead, just like our schoolteacher had taught us. But she also added that she had been ordered to bring me past them, straight to the Weighing Of The Heart! She said Anubis was eager to finally meet me. I was worried for Ka and Omi, traveling the path by themselves, but they told me not to be afraid. I should have realized: being boys, they were all too eager to fight their way past all the gates and horrible demons. Kebechet said they would do fine, as a lack of fear was their best defense. The mice ran off to face Duat's dangers while Kebechet lifted me up onto her back and slithered off down a shortcut. Her scales are very warm and smooth.\n\nAlong the way, we passed a pomegranate tree and I was only just able to reach out and grab one. The taste was as concentrated as every pom I've ever eaten all at once! I gobbled the delicious fruit greedily while taking in all the frightening, gorgeous wonders of the afterworld. I saw beasts that I could not hope to describe; giants with tusks and extra legs and wings! There was a river of pure green, and trees made of glass!\n\nSoon though, we reached the temple of the weighing. Here it would be determined if my soul was worthy of further passage. Despite Kebechet's encouragement, I was still afraid. She told me that everyone is, except fools.\n\nThe temple was almost more beautiful than our whole palace. I walked up many, many stone steps, and when I finally saw the tips of those perfect, pointed ears, I nearly swooned and tumbled backwards! A few more steps and I was in the presence of Anubis himself! I was shaking all over like a papyrus puppet. He looked down at me with the stern, emotionless gaze of a God, but I think I saw him smile for just a moment.\n\nHe is so tall! Taller than Papa or Sekhemib. Ten cubits, at least. His fur is short and smooth as can be, gleaming black like polished onyx. His sandals and clothing shine with gold and jewels. And while his eyes show centuries of wisdom, he has the body of a young man. Complete with a well-muscled chest and calves. I could not help my heart beating faster or warmth invading my cheeks...\n\nBut then its beats increased out of fear as Ammut came sauntering into view! She truly is as fearsome as her paintings! And she really is part lion, part hippopotamus and part crocodile. She might even have a baboon's tail; I'm not sure. But she is definitely large. On all fours she is taller than I am standing. She snorted and looked at me. I knew if my heart was too heavy, I would soon be stepping into her jaws and would disappear forever!\n\nBut Anubis saw my fear and comforted me by stroking my cheek. He did not regard me differently than any other soul, even though he had requested me. This seemed proper since my heart had not been weighed yet. He removed it with a gentleness that left me breathless and trembling! He simply reached into my chest and pulled it out, like dipping his hand into a pond and retrieving a stone. It felt so good I nearly fainted! My breath came haltingly as I felt my chest with both paws; no beat, no rhythm. It was a moment as terrifying as it was exhilarating. This was final proof I was truly in the land beyond life.\n\nThen Anubis showed me the scale, with the feather of Ma'at set to one side. My tail tucked itself between my legs. Never had I been so nervous! Not even before my execution! That was merely the loss of my life; failing this test could mean being condemned to restlessness for eternity!\n\nBut it turns out I had nothing to fear. When my heart was placed on the scale, the pan did not even budge. I nearly collapsed with relief. Anubis' stony demeanor broke and he swept me into a hug. He said he always knew I would pass.\n\nHe explained everything then. From his palace, he had seen me below and, though he knew the desire was selfish, could not wait until my natural death to meet me. He had to possess me. His last loyal servant had recently earned her passage into the paradise of Aaru and he was in need of a replacement. I am to become his new servant and live with him in Duat for the next thousand years!\n\nMy happiness is indescribable!\n\nI threw my arms around his broad, black shoulders and kissed him in gratitude, thanking him again and again for such an honor! My tail wagged like a dragonfly's wing!\n\nWe sat at the top of the steps and discussed the terms of my servitude as we waited for my mice to arrive. He even formally introduced Ammut, who is actually as sweet and playful as a cat when she is not acting out her fearsome role of the devourer of souls. Oh, and Anubis also told me that the souls she eats don't stay restless _forever_; they wander inside her just long enough for them to think about their actions and want to change. I told him that sounded very fair. He smiled slyly and said that he lets us mortals believe the more frightening story so we'll be good. Naughty Anubis! (So don't tell anyone about that except Mama and Papa!)\n\nYou can let Omi and Ka's parents know they're fine too. They arrived at the temple out of breath, covered in dust and bruises, and grinning ear to ear. They struggled up the stairs, laughing and boasting over which of them had the narrowest escapes from the road's many monsters. Anubis went back to his solemn posture and I hid while the boys had their hearts weighed. They were definitely as awed to meet Anubis as I was. I giggled when they flinched at Ammut!\n\nI had no doubt they would pass, and of course they did. I've always known they've the finest hearts in the land. I ran out to congratulate them. As I will become Anubis' servant, they will remain mine. We're all quite happy with the arrangement.\n\nSoon I will follow Anubis home to meet his wife Anput and begin my duties. Anubis has graciously allowed me to send this message to you, Wamukota. He thought it fair that he should confirm his end of the bargain. He also wanted me to tell you that he gives his thanks to Yahya and Muminah for relaying his visions.\n\nI do not know if I will be allowed to send any more messages through you. So if this is my final farewell, let Mama and Papa know I'll love them always and remember them always and I look forward to meeting them again someday. Give my thanks to Ka & Omi's parents for raising such fine attendants. Thank all the nice priests who mummified me. Thank Tabia and Sekhemib and Yahya and Nezim and all our other servants. Tell my friends at school I hope they live joyful lives. And give yourself a hug and pretend it's my arms around you, dear Wamukota.\n\nGoodbye!\n\n\n*****\n\n\n-PAPYRUS FOUR-\n\n\n{It has been seven months, and once again I find myself waking to find words in front of me that I do not remember writing. I passed on Princess Moswenkiya's message to the Pharaoh and Queen, and asked Yahya to convey some of the rest to the people in the guise of one of his augurings. But this new missive... I'm not sure I dare show it to anyone besides myself! I might be thrown into jail for obscenity!}\n\n\nMy status has shifted completely. Once I was a princess, and now I am a slave.\n\nWamukota, I may get in trouble for sending you this message and have to spend an afternoon in Ammut's belly, but I couldn't resist any longer sharing my happiness with someone!\n\nTime is strange here. I have no clue how long I have lived in Duat in the home of Master Anubis and Mistress Anput. I only know I wouldn't mind staying forever. My small, cozy quarters are filled with finery that would leave Papa's treasurers speechless. My bed is literally a harnessed cloud! My dresses dazzle with gold and jewels. My sandals are lined with Kafele's fur (I shall explain that momentarily). And there are no more tedious morningtime rituals; I wake and simply wish to be dressed. Suddenly I am! Magic! Then I am ready to begin my day's duties.\n\nI am 100% tireless now. I have found in my heart a deeply fulfilling willingness to serve. Whatever is asked of me, I perform with eager eyes and wagging tail. I do not know if this realm has changed me, or if I have simply uncovered something within myself I never knew. Regardless, I relish it. Sometimes I am so happy for my new life I cannot help but cry.\n\nKa and Omi are still as helpful as ever also. They handle some of the palace's dirty work while I make sure Anubis is relaxed and entertained. Master Anubis has living stone statues to do most of the cooking and cleaning, but we pitch in too. (There's even a statue in the bathroom that wipes one's backside!)\n\nSince Omi, Ka and I are dead, we cannot die again. This means that if our fur or meat are needed, we can be harvested to furnish them. Then we spring back to life simply by Anubis or Anput blowing us a kiss. I tried not to show my fear the first time Mistress Anput prepared me for dinner. Have I not described her yet? She is nearly as tall as Anubis and a jackaless like me. Her ears are peerlessly beautiful. Her curves are like desert dunes. She is much more informal than her husband. While he watches over all of mortality and beyond, she is content to keep the palace running smoothly. That means sometimes preparing meals. That means sometimes me. She uses a glistening blade carved from pure moonlight. It cuts as sweetly as a caress. All my worries melted away the first time she butchered me. I became a lovely plate of seasoned cutlets and was swimming in drowsy pleasure the whole time.\n\nSince then, I have been eaten or harvested many, many times. My fur has now become a pillow for Anput, a pair of slippers for Anubis, and a full set of pajamas for Kebechet! That took so many deaths it was almost exhausting! Kebechet lives here at the palace too, but she comes and goes as she pleases. I also learned from Anput that she chose her snake form in a fit of teenage rebellion, and liked it so much she never changed back!\n\nAs mentioned, both Ka and Omi's fur have become part of my wardrobe, and they are always so eager to be my evening meal I sometimes have to turn them down for variety's sake. Though the scent of spit-roasted mouseboy is certainly one of my favorites. I'm licking my jaws just writing that!\n\nI must describe the palace! It seems somber at first, but I have quickly embraced it as my new home. The floors are black onyx; shined so perfectly they are like mirrors. The Master is quite fond of columns and long hallways. Sometimes the boys and I play ball games in the corridors. The ceilings are glass; magically magnified so you can see all the night sky from any point in the palace. Candles are everywhere; Anput is very fond of them. It makes an enjoyably dim and spooky atmosphere befitting the God of death. Master Anubis' throne is the grandest part of the palace. At the top of a small, wide pyramid with golden steps, he sits and sees across the worlds. The blood-red fabric is so soft it makes me shiver to touch it. I sat in it once and got a spanking afterwards, but it was worth it!\n\nI do not want to give the impression that I have a cruel master. Not at all! Master Anubis spanks me mostly as play, and I find it hard to keep the smile from my face when he has me over his knee. He is normally quite emotionless as he deals with each day's business. Like Kebechet, he can be in many places simultaneously, weighing the hearts of a dozen souls or keeping watch over the land of the living. He is very professional and efficient. He does not smile often, but instead shows his kindness through his touch. His hands are powerful enough to crush stone, yet he pets me with a gentleness that makes me weak. Any moment I am with him I am happy. I am his to command.\n\nMistress Anput is not jealous. I am her husband's pet and toy, and she has her own besides. Omi & Ka fill that role sometimes. I also notice many handsome newly-dead gentlemen passing through her bedchambers. Just as Master Anubis samples feminine mortals as well. They are Gods, after all.\n\nYou may notice I have not mentioned specifics of my duties as Anubis' servant. I have been putting off describing them for fear you will find them scandalous. But as I said, the Gods have a different morality than ours.\n\nMy first night, Anubis placed a ruby collar around my throat and led me by a string to his bedchambers. My nervousness showed. His wonderful hands relaxed me. His smoky voice reassured me that he would not ask more of me than I was willing to perform. I was requested to remove his clothing. Like a good servant, I obeyed. Together we sat on his enormous purple bed (blankets sewn from tiger fur!) and he held me close. I felt so tiny! Then I felt a glorious warmth. I looked down to see his manhood. I must admit; I screamed a little. It's length is comparable to Papa's arm! Blacker even than his fur, it glistened with male honey. The scent washed all my thoughts away. My hands reached out and my instincts took over.\n\nI barely remember the rest of that night. I was in a haze. The heat was more powerful than the hottest summers. I did not resist a single thing my Master asked of me. I gave myself to him entirely, to own body and soul forever. Somehow, his fearsome maleness was able to penetrate me. I think I may have died a few times, I'm not sure. I only know that in the morning, I woke up to his soft kisses between my ears, and being told that I had pleased him greatly.\n\nThis was not a solitary occurrence. I please my Master almost every night, and am endlessly proud to do so. On my nights off, I share a bed with Ka and Omi, and we practice tender techniques on on another to give even more enjoyment to our masters. My mice have limitless energy. They fill me up like two corks in a bottle.\n\nIt's not all hedonism though. When my Master is on his throne, projecting himself to other realms, I often give him a massage. This is difficult, since his shoulders are as broad as an ox, but I'm getting better. Sometimes I simply lie in his lap and let him stroke me as if I were a kitten. Sometimes I even meow to make him laugh. He is also very fond of the taste of my heartsblood (hence why he requested my particular demise), and will often idly drink from me with a straw when we sit together. It doesn't hurt a bit now!\n\nBut one of my favorite duties of all is servicing Master Anubis' feet. I could lie at the foot of his throne for hours every day, simply losing myself in rubbing his beautiful paws. The smoothness of his fur, the give of his pawpads beneath my grip... Even their odor is quite stimulating. I make sure Master's paws are always sparkling clean. I lick over every inch with my tongue and always get between the toes. Sometimes my wonderful Master rewards me by using me as a footstool for a while.\n\nSomething similar the boys enjoy is the care and feeding of Ammut. She doesn't just eat souls, but normal foods too. Omi and Ka bring her bushels of fresh fruit and meat every day, then comb her coat and play with her. I'll often hear her footfalls thundering down the halls as they playfully chase each other. And naturally, she finds the boys as yummy as I do, so Master Anubis often has to rescue them from her belly. (She's made a meal of me as well sometimes, when I am especially in need of punishment. Though sometimes she also lets me take a nap on her enormous mattress of a tongue.)\n\nMy relationships with Mistress Anput and Princess Kebechet are less intensely physical, but still very agreeable. We often hug and enjoy one another's bodies. We talk for hours, swapping stories and memories. They are fond of teaching me new tricks to try on Master Anubis to drive him feral with lust. Other times we simply cuddle. Occasionally I will be invited into the bedroom when the Master and Mistress are amorous. Their lovemaking is so powerful that each time I am reduced to a worn-out frazzled pelt at the end of the evening! But I look forward to it every time nonetheless!\n\nI've met (and serviced) many other deities too. Kebechet is always bringing friends by; often sons and daughters of other gods and goddesses. Amentet and Renpet come over about once a week to lounge around in her room sharing gossip. Wepwawet seems to be a mentor to Anubis, and my Master often comes to the old dog for advice. Thoth also visits quite often to play skill games or discuss philosophy. Anput and Bastet are close comrades too. The cat goddess is especially partial to me and loves braiding my hair and tail. I also enjoy playing along with her endless game of 'seducing' Master Anubis, then letting Anput 'catch' them so they can have lusty battles in the bedroom!\n\nIf there's one aspect of my duties I don't entirely care for, it's when Master Anubis needs someone to test an aspect of death for him. The boys usually volunteer to show how brave they are. But I nonetheless get called upon as well. Since Master Anubis oversees all deaths, he must make sure they all produce correct results. Also that they send all mortals to the first gates of Duat like they're supposed to. Consequently, I now know what it's like to die from scorpion sting (extremely unpleasant pinchy pain), to be buried alive in sand (panicky at first, put pleasant in a tactile way), to be crushed under heavy falling stones (that one was kind of fun in a frightening way), to be struck by lightning (over too quickly to be sure) and to be decapitated (I will admit to enjoying the strangeness of holding my own head in my paws). Master Anubis always makes the pain go away afterwards and rewards us with praise, kisses and extra desserts at dinner. Plus he lets us relax afterwards by sinking in the quicksand pit. I love the feel of nice cool mud squishing between my toes!\n\nMy very favorite way to expire is when Master Anubis simply *wills* us to death. I love to feel the awesome power of his spirit commanding my essence to calmness. He usually does this when he needs to go away on errands and can't take Omi, Ka and I along. Then we are lovingly killed and taken to the room of living bandages (I've snuck in many times to let them capture me and hold me helpless until I am rescued!). We are mummified together and left in a cozy pile. Wrapped up wonderfully tight, sometimes for days and weeks at a time! Immobilized in darkness and linen... You cannot know how much my heart leaps when Master Anubis informs us he has been called away on business.\n\nYesterday was typical. I woke up, garbed myself in shades of gold and pink, then pounced my mice to awaken them. Then the boys went to work giving Ammut a bath (She only trampled them a little bit) while I went to my Master's bedchamber to begin my daily service. I found him asleep with Kebechet. I told you Gods are different! We snuggled together in the sheets for a while before it was time to begin the day. I helped them both get dressed, then aided Kebechet in the shower. She says she'll be shedding her skin soon and will make me some lovely gloves and boots from it. I can't wait! Later at the breakfast table, Ka, Omi and I served our Masters steaming crocodile sausages with scrambled swan's eggs, then listened as Anubis talked work. He said there seemed to be another war on the horizon in the northern lands, so he might be busier than usual soon. He left to sit on his throne while I went with Mistress Anput and Kebechet to see some musicians perform in the garden. Lovely! Hours later I scampered to the throne room to find my Master lost in his duties and frightfully anxious. Ashamed of letting him get to such a state, I leapt to action. I lowered his pants and vigorously soothed his tension with my paws and tongue. This did wonders for his mood but required me to take a shower afterwards! At lunch, the stone servants led me to the kitchen and made me into a very savory rice and onion soup. Anput made sure to revive me so I could enjoy a bowl of myself too. Kebechet left for a date with Nefertum. I rejoined Master in the throne room and attended to his gorgeous feet for many hours. His soles hypnotized all my thoughts away. He took a break after a while to release some energy, and came back an hour later with an elephantlike demon he'd slain in the jungle with his bare hands. It was hard to chew but otherwise delicious. After dinner we servants were given some free time. We splashed in the pool and challenged each other to stay under the longest. Soon enough Anput was fishing us out and reviving us. We all got spanked but she was grinning too much to be genuinely cross. In the evening, the Master and Mistress called us three to their shared bedchamber. With a bit of pulling and folding, we were flattened into blankets for them to lie upon. Their warm weight on top of me was most satisfying, as were their cries and howls of love. It's good to see them so happy. I know some Gods and Goddesses have hasty tempers and volcanic marriages, but my owners seem the perfect picture of frisky contentment.\n\nIf this is where I am to stay for the next thousand years, I cannot imagine a happier afterlife. What more could Aaru hold for me than this? What greater paradise could it aspire to be? I have love and purpose here. I have my mice. I yearn only to be the best servant I can for my beloved Master and Mistress.\n\nWorry not for me, Wamukota. Sometimes I am granted the privilege of sharing Master Anubis' cosmic sight. I can see into the world of the living. I can see my cute new brother, Nakhti-Senbi, and am so glad he's doing well. I can see the beautiful paintings of my sarcophagus and am glad the people can appreciate the beauty Tabia put into it. And I can see Mama and Papa. I know they still mourn for me. But tell them that the years we will be separated are but a heartbeat in the afterworld. We will all see each other again. In time, we may even be reborn to new lives with new memories someday. Until then, I am safe and well cared for, and I do my best to be useful. What life could be better?\n\nAlso, there is one other reason I send you these words, not just to confide my joy in. Ma'at visited us the other day and offered me a prophecy. She said that, far in the future, a bolt of thunder from a distant country would help spread my story to new generations. So I should be sure to send him thanks. Maybe I'll know what that means someday.\n\nThat's all I can think of to tell, Wamukota. You have my gratitude for once again being my conduit. One day, when your heart is weighed, I shall be the first to welcome you with a great big kiss on your old bald head.\n\nAll my love,\nFirst servant Moswenkiya\n\n\n~~~~~\n\n\nTranslator's notes:\n A fanciful tale or a true account of what awaits us beyond this life? All the character names, no matter how made-up-sounding, are all taken from a website of ancient Egyptian names, and I chose them based on their meanings. For instance, Princess Nedjes-Moswenkiya translates to 'little white joyous lady'. Cute, huh? Also, I did make extensive use of Google to make sure I had correct details about mummification, the land of the dead, the various gods 'n goddesses, etcetera. In the process, I found out that some of the demons who guard the gates of Duat have rather interesting titles. Such as \"Blood-Drinker Who Comes From The Slaughterhouse\" and \"One Who Eats The Excrement Of His Hindquarters\".\n\nAlso, yes, this was partly inspired by me watching Don't Eat The Pictures as a kid.\n\nThanks go to my Skype proofreading team of Robby, Relee, Kanada and a little bit of Landon. And while it is nigh-impossible for men of science to consider literally the prospect that Usitor's long reign of unparalleled vigor and healthfulness is the result of a deal with his deity, the explanation given within the papyri matches up with true life events uncannily enough to give one pause.
     Further note: as Nedjes-Moswenkiya was but ten years old upon her passing, I have attempted to recreate the voice of a young girl for this translation. I have no scientific ambition in mind for this task. This is merely a labor born of an idle and meddlesome muse. Truth or fiction, the story fascinates me for its own reasons.
          -James Silksmith, Cairo

~~~~~
-FIRST PAPYRUS-
Two more days! Two more wonderful days!
It's hard to believe it's been a full year since Seer Yahya's vision. So much has happened since then. At first it seemed like the day of my sacrifice would never come. Now suddenly, it is nearly upon me! I have so much left to do in my little time left. But this is most important. I asked Mama to grant me an audience with Scribe Wamukota so I could leave a record of my last days. I want all of Egypt to know I am facing the altar willingly, with nothing but joy in my heart!
I remember the exact morning when Yahya, drenched in sweat and babbling, burst into Papa's dining chamber. Papa has a temper at mealtimes and I've seen him order those who interrupt his meals to serve a week's duty scrubbing the royal toilets. But Yahya was insistent. He had received his clearest vision ever: a message from Anubis himself!
That got our attention! Being jackals ourselves, our family has always known Anubis favors us. But now, according to Yahya, he was saying so directly. The fitful petrel described to us a dream he had just awoken from:
Anubis had summoned Yahya to his palace, and there had given him an offer to pass on to Papa. He'd said there was a certain white-furred jackaless he had need of in the afterworld. If the arrangement was accepted, the white jackal's heartsblood would be spilled into a golden bowl. Each person who then dipped their finger into the blood would be granted a long life free of serious illness or injury.
I was stunned as I listened! For surely, there is only one albino female jackal in all of Egypt, and it is me. I felt both terrified and starstruck. The great and mighty god of death wanted *me*? How could I possibly be special?
Papa was fearsomely angry at first. Understandably so! He loves me so much, he said, he could never bring himself to end my life because of a single dream. Yahya begged and blubbered for Papa to show mercy. He was only relaying the message he'd been given, he said, his feathers falling all over our dining table. Mama could see Papa was almost ready to order Yahya's execution, but suggested simply confining him instead. Maybe he simply has a fever and is imagining things, she said.
Papa yells a lot and acts fierce, but he's never truly cruel. He agreed to Mama's suggestion and told the guards to keep Yahya under observation for a few days. If the petrel hadn't proven his worth to us with all his other divinations, I think Papa might have banished him to the desert instead.
But then, the very next day, a messenger arrived from Hardai, saying that he had ridden all night to tell of a wondrous prophecy that had been made to a local wisewoman. Another message from Anubis! The same request Yahya had described, to the letter!
Well! Papa certainly apologized to Yahya in a hurry!
It was decided then: I would be given to Anubis in nearly one years' time, upon the day of his feast.
I was very afraid for a while. Naturally so. Who wouldn't be? Even if it meant glory in the afterworld, I would be facing a very painful end with a sharp blade driven into my poor heart. It also meant losing my Mama, Papa, my home, my friends, and all the beloved citizens I'd hoped to rule someday. Thankfully though, as soon as I told them the news, Kafele and Abayomi nearly fought to be first to pledge their lives to me.
Ka and Omi are the best servants a princess could ever hope for. It is partly for them that I write this down. They have been such devoted friends, I want to be sure that their names are remembered for as long as Papa's. Nowhere in Egypt can anyone find two mice more devoted to their duty. By chance or grace, they were born the same month as I, to two of our most loyal servant families. It was decided that they would be groomed to be my personal attendants. All three of us enjoy the arrangement very much. The boys are always at my side to cheer me up, draw my bath, bring me meals, share a joke, or help me get away with mischief!
Knowing that they had vowed without hesitation to join me in my fate made me feel much better. I am sure Aaru is a beautiful afterworld, but even our palace is cold when I am alone in it. I know there is supposed to be decorum between royalty and slave, but I gave both boys many hugs and kisses to thank them for their devotedness!
Since then, I have become happier and happier as I await my moment of glory. I think of the faces of the peasants who Papa grants an audience to. Their eyes sparkle with disbelief that they are sharing the air with the ruler of all Egypt. As Princess, our status and luxury feels humdrum at times. But to meet with a God! To be chosen personally! I am certain I will stutter and blush in his presence just as much as any peasant. (Even though Mama has been giving me lessons on the proper etiquette for meeting deities.)
Plus, the wait itself has been a happy one. When news of Anubis' offer reached the populace, it seemed as if everyone in the world came to see me and wish me well. Travelers even from far beyond the Nile have arrived! Although that may have as much to do with me as the festivals Papa has been arranging. Smells of good food and celebratory songs fill the air in every city we travel to. I have tasted foods so dazzling to my tongue they seem like magic! I have seen colors, dances and sorcery the likes of which I couldn't hope to describe! There are even dolls of me that the peasant children play with. The very thought makes me giggle bashfully!
Planning my funeral was an unexpected joy too. Papa at first wanted to commission a pyramid for my resting place to rival even Khufu's. But I talked him out of it. Silly Papa! Such extravagance would only embarrass me! I told him I would be perfectly happy with a modest tomb, so long as it contained my favorite things. So, while Papa has busied himself commissioning the tomb itself, Mama and I have busied ourselves deciding how to fill it.
It's strange to see my bedchamber and playroom so empty today, but I know all my possessions are safe and sound under the sand, where I'll soon be too. Mama and I oversaw the men moving everything to the tomb, and Ka and Omi helped me arrange everything just so. The portrait of Mama and Papa I asked for is even more beautiful than I'd dreamt of. The artists have filled every inch of wall with even more portraits and stories. My mice and I even took turns drawing each other in one corner! But the best part was sitting for the sculptress Tabia. I had to keep very still the whole time, but it was fascinating watching her shape my face from clay, and then to gold, for my sarcophagus. It gleams so brilliantly! Adorned with turquoise chips as blue as if they were carved from the sky, and even pink coral to match my eyes! I couldn't be happier with it. I even got to lie down inside it to make sure it was comfortable enough. It certainly is. My body will rest quite peacefully here while I go on to meet the pantheon.
But of all the wonderful things that have happened since Yahya's vision, the best has been a gift, not to myself, but to Mama and Papa. A son! All the doctors and priests have confirmed it, and Mama's tummy is even starting to display roundness. In the past months, Papa had been doing his best to be supportive of me and show me all the love in the world, though I could still see disappointment and worry in his eyes at times when he thought I wasn't watching. I understood perfectly well. With me gone, who would ascend the throne? Yet Bastet seems to have smiled upon us now. A new little brother is coming. I'm a bit sad I won't get to meet him in person, but sometimes I hold Mama's belly and whisper to him, telling him to be as wise a prince as I had planned to be a princess.
That's enough for today. Dinnertime is soon, and I'm sure I will have more to say tomorrow! Thank you, Wamukota!
*****
-PAPYRUS TWO-
The sacrifice is tonight! I am so full of anticipation, I feel as though lightning sizzles inside my fur! My heart flutters fast, eager for the blade. My tail hasn't stopped wagging all day! All of Egypt celebrates outside our palace. Even in this inner chamber I can hear the thrum of music and singing through the walls. I hope I will put on a good show.
Kafele and Abayomi were at my bedside this morning, each shaking an arm to wake me up. They'd brought me a lovely breakfast and I couldn't bear to send them away while I ate it. Decorum is unimportant today. I shared everything with them. Both the food and my feelings. Snuggled in my silk blankets, we held each other and bared everything we were feeling. We were no longer princess and servants: we were three overwhelmed children who needed each other. All our joys, all our worries came out. We all cried. Afterwards, my heart felt light as a feather. I hugged them both and told them I was no longer afraid of anything so long as I had them by my side.
They attended my fur for the last time, placing every last tuft perfectly. After that, I dismissed them to their own activities for the day. I can spend an afternoon taking care of myself; I'm not helpless. Besides, it was important for me to spend my last hours with my parents, so I know Ka and Omi would feel the same. Mama had given both their families the week off too, she said.
There was a big breakfast banquet to attend (which was a little boring but at least the food was yummy). Governors and dignitaries from Egypt and beyond all made speeches and wished me well. Papa kept teasing me by tickling my paws under the table when I was supposed to be keeping stoic and royal!
Later, Tabia arrived to show off my finished Canopic jars. I've always thought they looked cute, like little dolls. It's strange to think that by tonight they will hold my lungs, liver, stomach and intestines. Tabia wanted to make sure the designs met with my approval. They certainly did; the head of Duamutef even looked a bit like Uncle Abubakar. I signed each one with a pawprint.
I asked Papa and Mama if we could walk through the gardens one last time. It was a beautiful warm afternoon. We remembered all our best memories. Papa promised Egypt would never forget me, not for a thousand generations. I told him I would do my very best to be polite to all the Gods and make him proud. Later we toured the marketplace and I was swarmed by grateful citizens. Papa and the bodyguards were wary, but I let anyone who wanted to touch me do so. My paws were kissed and I got many hugs. Ladies put flowers in my hair. Many people offered me gifts, which I graciously accepted. Poor Nizam had quite a load to carry back for us! I have no need of these toys and trinkets so I will ask Papa to give them to peasant children when I am gone.
We had an early dinner so the priests could prepare me for tonight's ritual. They led me to a dim, pleasant-smelling chamber where I was laid on a table upon soft cloth. Four women cleaned me gently from toe to eartip. Quite relaxing! I asked where Omi and Ka were and Sekhemib told me they were being prepared in another room. I asked that they join me so we could enjoy the experience together. He was a bit flustered (he's always been stuffy about doing everything just so!) but I'm the princess so I got my way. Soon the boys were lying beside me and we could hold hands as we were purified. Plus, I was able to peek a few times and see their little snakes!
The ritual continued with strange smoke fanned onto us. It smelled nice but made me sneeze. Then our fur was painted with kohl and gold and henna. Very tickly! I did my best to not be squirmy as the attendants drew their designs with tiny brushes. The boys were fitted with jewelry and ceremonial hats. I was given a beautiful black and silver dress that shimmered like the night sky. It's so pretty I asked that it be placed in my tomb with my other clothes, even if it does get a bit stained during the ceremony.
That brings us to now, Wamukota. I request that you be by my side during the ritual to record my final thoughts. Thank you for all your many years of service to me and my family.
{Here, the dear princess stood and kissed my old bald head. She is a gem. As queen, she would have been wise and generous beyond measure. I understand completely why Anubis is so eager to meet her.}
{I followed Nedjes-Moswenkiya to the palace balcony. Outside, many thousands of citizens had gathered, and their cheer when the Pharaoh's family emerged nearly struck me deaf! These donkey's ears have grown overly sensitive in my old age. Innumerable torches turned the darkness of night into day. The colors dazzled. The sheer presence of the assembled crowd could be felt as if its own elemental force.}
{My Pharaoh made a long speech and the crowd silenced for him. Princess Moswenkiya was fidgeting with anticipation, her smile as broad as the Nile. Another cheer came when she stood up and addressed the people. She pledged her love and loyalty to all, and said she had imperforate faith that Anubis would fulfill his promise. She said she was glad to give her life to her people. I can see the populace's love for her in every pair of eyes.}
{Sekhemib and his priests entered, followed by servants carrying the golden bowl. I saw the little princess gulp at it, and her mother then reassured her with a hug. Sekhemib, that old ham, could not resist a speech of his own. He droned on for twice the length of the Pharaoh and Princesses's speeches combined. I am surprised anyone in the crowd remained awake by the end.}
{Finally though, Moswenkiya gives her parents a last hug. She even made a point of trotting over to where her housemice were saying their own familial goodbyes, to gratefully embrace their parents as well. After that, the three children approached the altar; paw in paw in paw. You would think the trio were siblings.}
{As the princess watched, her beloved servants met their ends. The two boys very bravely ascended the steps and were cheered by the people. I could see their blushes from where I sat. The executioners offered the boys the option of strangling or poison. The mice seemed to have discussed this at length beforehand, as they both asked for the noose with one voice, saying it would be more entertaining for the crowd.}
{With confidence, the boys met their destinies and slipped the ropes around their necks by their own paws. They bowed to the Pharaoh, to the Queen, to the people, then blew kisses to the Princess. Side by side, they stepped off the stone and plummeted. A short drop, their necks stretch, and they began their fatal sway.}
I am filled with sadness, excitement and pride, Wamukota! My dear servants are so brave! They smile even now! Look how they kick and dance! I almost envy them. I am sure there must be pain, but they seem almost to be enjoying themselves. ...Oh!
{The princess's cheeks are now as red as rouge. She has noticed the boys' loincloths. I tell her this is a perfectly ordinary consequence of hanging. She cannot take her eyes away.}
{Kafele and Abayomi seem to be in competition with each other to see who can survive the longest. To my surprise, it is Abayomi who perishes first, and quite suddenly too. His companion smiles triumphantly and allows himself to relax. Then both boys are still, their only motion caused by the night's breeze.}
{The crowd cheers ear-splittingly again. Priests lower the boys down with utmost gentleness. Princess Moswenkiya touches both their foreheads and whispers to them.}
I told them that I'll be right there with them soon. It's a shivery feeling to see them lying so still, knowing that theirs will be my fate too in just a moment. But mine will be more painful, won't it?
{I reassure her with a gentle pat, just as I spot Tumaini arriving with the elixir. I overheard his discussion with Usitor earlier: it is new medicine from the finest scientific minds of the West. More powerful than any pain-relieving serum yet developed. The princess is very grateful for this, and gulps the violet liquid down. She says it tastes of mulberries.}
{The princess says she can feel the potion tingling in her pawpads and tail, and is ready to face her fate. Many more loud hurrahs as she ascends towards the golden bowl. Naturally, Sekhemib must make another speech. There shall be no rest for my ears this night! As he drones, Moswenkiya casts farewell glances to her mother and father. But when Sekhemib finishes, the princess' face is as resolute a portrait of courage as I have ever seen.}
Let all the people know that I feel honored and joyous to accept this offer from mighty Anubis!
{She steps up to the bowl and two strong servants hold her arms out. Sekhemib exposes her chest. The folds of her dress dance in the breeze. Her white fur shines like a second moon. Badru brings the knife. It has been specially crafted with great care: a tube runs from tip to hilt, so the princess' blood may flow like a fountain.}
{Sekhemib lets Anubis know that the time is now. He places his hand on Moswenkiya's forehead to comfort her. The princess closes her eyes.}
{The crowd's silence is split by her shriek of pain.}
{Then her heartsblood, each drop like a tiny ruby, leaps from the blade and into the bowl. It is the ideal of red; nothing could be redder. The princess' eyes are wide. There is clearly agony, but she is withstanding it with the strength of a full-grown man. I do not know whether to give credit to the potion or to her will.}
Wamukota! The pain! Oh it hurts, it hurts! But it is such a clear, perfect pain! A silver, gleaming pain! It is beautiful in its own way! I know I have only moments left! I am more awake than I have ever been!
{The princess looks down at her own scarlet essence, cascading from her breast in spurts, as her heart pumps its last tortured beats. Each spray darts through the air like fish jumping into a pond. She is awed by the sight. I can see redness reflected in her eyes. I can see her paws and legs tremble. I can see her breath flutter.}
I'm not afraid! This is what my whole life has been for. I give my life to my people. If I cannot be queen, I will give you my life and health instead of my rule. I love you all!
{The people cheer!}
I can feel my fingers and toes going numb, Wamukota. I'll be over soon. I'm truly unafraid. Even as my skin grows cold, I feel a warmth from the other side. I can see lights! They're dancing, and so many colors! I'm going to meet Anubis, I really am! I'm so happy!
{The princess' voice wavers, but only from physical weakness. Her spirit is completely resolute. Could even the mightiest Pharaohs and generals of the past face death with such passionate welcome?}
{Her eyes focus on a point beyond the crowd now, somewhere far off in the night sky. Her leaps of blood have grown smaller. She is down to her last drops. Her eyes are wide as twin moons.}
I can see!
{Her body shudders; spasms. The crowd of thousands makes not even the sound of breath. The last ruby sparkles drip from the hilt of the knife.}
ANUBIS!!
{This is Princess Moswenkiya's last word. She shouts it with a strength that should be impossible for her tiny, emptied body. Her face erupts into joy, then goes suddenly slack. In an instant her body has gone from rigid to limp. She slumps in the arms of the servants, no more animate than a doll.}
{The crowd erupts with joyous noise, and it is all the excuse I need to ask Usitor for permission to escape the din and return to the palace. He grants my request and begins his final speech of the night. He is holding back his tears admirably well.}
{I do not dash to my quarters but instead follow the priests as they bear Moswenkiya to the mummification room. Her eyes are still open as wide as they can be.}
{Did she really see him? Mighty Anubis?}
{I have doubt in my heart sometimes. As scribe, I sometimes see more than I should, including inconsistencies that have made my mind rattle with worry about whether or not the gods truly watch over us. I know I may be banished for writing this, but I care not.}
{Whatever doubts I may have had, I am certain that in her final instant of life, my dear beloved princess had none at all.}
*****
-PAPYRUS THREE-
{I hardly believe myself as I write this inscription. I have awoken from a feverish dream-choked night to find myself sitting upright at my board, quill in hand. The papyrus before me is either the cruelest joke imaginable, played by a servant whose throat I will crush if I ever discover them, or... Or it is a message. Sent from beyond the twilight by our dear princess Nedjes-Moswenkiya!}
I really did see Anubis! I did!
Just as I was fading away, his face appeared on the moon, more handsome than I'd ever imagined! He gave me a nod of approval just before everything went dark.
I couldn't hear, feel or see anything. There was nothing but infinite blackness and my mind tumbling within it. I'd have been shaking with fear if I'd had anything to shake.
But then a voice was beside me: a gentle hiss. It was Kebechet! Tell Papa he was right, Wamukota: I remember arguing with him that a jackal couldn't have a snake for a daughter, but a snake she certainly is. And a very compassionate one! At first all I could hear was her voice, but she spoke with me a long while and helped me relax. She said her father was very proud of how brave I was. That made me tingle with pride.
Soon the priests were performing the ceremonies to reawaken my senses. That was a great relief! I could finally see and hear again. It was exciting to view the mummification room from the perspective of the slab. I couldn't move, but I could watch the priests circling my corpse and doing their work. I know that getting purified and wrapped up took a few months, but it only seemed like days to me. It was like floating on the surface of a dream.
Being dead wasn't as unpleasant as I'd worried. My body seemed to grow numb at the edges, and brittle inside like an old empty bamboo box. It was an unusual, but restful, sensation. You can also inform Papa that everyone did an excellent job taking care of my remains. Very gentle and respectful. Even the antelope fellow who pulled my brains out with a hook! I'd been considerably frightened of that part, ever since I learned of it in school. But it didn't feel painful, just squirmy. Kebechet held my hand and brought me cool water to drink.
She also helped me talk with Ka and Omi. They're doing fine too. Kebechet told me that, since she is a goddess, she can sit and comfort many, many souls simultaneously. (I was actually quite glad to hear that. I'd been worried I was taking up all of her time!) Through her, my mice and I could relay messages. Omi said he really liked getting to see what all his organs looked like. Wet and slimy and slippery. Ew! Ka said he was amused by how his stiffy wouldn't go down after his death no matter what the priests tried. Naughty mouse!
Being cut open was surprisingly enjoyable. I felt a wave of shivery calm hit me as the knife went in. Like a water pouch deflating. Each of my organs was removed with reverence. My liver had a particularly pretty hue. Into the Canopic jar it went, safe and sound. Then the priests put all sorts of nice-smelling oils and leaves and salts inside me. It was wonderfully relaxing. Better than the spa treatments Mama and I used to attend. The longer I was dead, the nicer it felt. Like sinking into an endlessly soft bed.
But the best part was the bandages! Oh, Wamukota! Tell everyone how good it feels so they will look forward to it with great anticipation! The priests started with my hands, feet and tail. The linen was wound around and around and around. So tight, like Mama's hugs. Linen up my arms and up my legs. Even around my girlflower. Warm, soft tightness surrounding my whole body!
They pulled my limbs and tail tight to my body and added lots more linen. I couldn't move anyway, since my ka was gone, but the bandages made me never *want* to! The priests put some wet stuff over my face to make a cast of it. (It's neat to think that soon there'll be statues around the palace that look just like me!) Then my face and ears were swaddled too. Darkness again. Bliss! I felt so secure in my wrappings. My golden faceplate and decorations were added next and bandaged into place. Quite heavy, but I didn't have the slightest care. Even if there was no afterworld to progress to, I think I would have been perfectly content to stay wrapped up and cozy in my sarcophagus forever. I was bound every inch in soft tightness. Warm, content, and perfectly adrift from the physical world.
I was fully mummified now. After making sure I would be okay on my own, Kebechet left my side and said that she would meet me again soon enough in Duat. I thanked her again and again for her kindness. I used to be afraid of snakes when I was little, but not anymore!
Omi, Ka and I were carried from the mummification chamber in a big parade. By now I had discovered how to 'see' with ghostly sight and had been practicing for a while. When we left the palace, the bright sun was overwhelming after so long a time inside! Nevertheless, I was proud to be at the head of the parade and see all the people gathered for me. Though it hurt my heart to see so many so sad. I wished I could allay their grief by calling out that I was well in spirit. (Pardon my joke!)
I saw you there at the parade, Wamukota. And Mama and Papa. Mama looks like she might give birth to my little brother any day now! Please give him all my best wishes when he arrives.
The parade went all through the town to my tomb. I was carried down the steps, down deep inside. It was nice to be in dimness again, and to see all my toys and clothes so neatly arranged. And it was even better to see Ka and Omi's coffins laid down beside mine. Side by side by side; my eternal protectors! I couldn't wait to leave my body and be able to hug them again.
Then everyone else went away and it was just Sekhemib and the other priests circling my sarcophagus, speaking quiet words. I felt my soul begin to quiver. Then I began to rise! I floated up out of my bandages, up through the wooden and golden lid. I was a spirit now! A misty trace of my former image, like a smudged charcoal drawing upon the air itself. And my mice were right beside me! They looked spooky in a cute way. We tried to hug, but we were as insubstantial as smoke.
A voice spoke, and a hole opened in reality. Beyond lay the land of the dead. I said goodbye to the priests, to Egypt, to my former life, and passed through.
I was dumbstruck when I first saw Duat. It is similar to our world, but everything is so much *more*! The trees are taller, the animals fiercer, the colors brighter! Kebechet was there waiting for us, and giggled at our wide eyed expressions.
When we regained our senses and found we had become once again solid, my mice and I were finally able to hold one another and rejoice that we were together again. Our tails twined and intertwined, and we all shared dozens of kisses. We also showed our gratitude to Kebechet too. And being a snake, her coils give excellent hugs!
The elegant serpent told us about the road of trials ahead, just like our schoolteacher had taught us. But she also added that she had been ordered to bring me past them, straight to the Weighing Of The Heart! She said Anubis was eager to finally meet me. I was worried for Ka and Omi, traveling the path by themselves, but they told me not to be afraid. I should have realized: being boys, they were all too eager to fight their way past all the gates and horrible demons. Kebechet said they would do fine, as a lack of fear was their best defense. The mice ran off to face Duat's dangers while Kebechet lifted me up onto her back and slithered off down a shortcut. Her scales are very warm and smooth.
Along the way, we passed a pomegranate tree and I was only just able to reach out and grab one. The taste was as concentrated as every pom I've ever eaten all at once! I gobbled the delicious fruit greedily while taking in all the frightening, gorgeous wonders of the afterworld. I saw beasts that I could not hope to describe; giants with tusks and extra legs and wings! There was a river of pure green, and trees made of glass!
Soon though, we reached the temple of the weighing. Here it would be determined if my soul was worthy of further passage. Despite Kebechet's encouragement, I was still afraid. She told me that everyone is, except fools.
The temple was almost more beautiful than our whole palace. I walked up many, many stone steps, and when I finally saw the tips of those perfect, pointed ears, I nearly swooned and tumbled backwards! A few more steps and I was in the presence of Anubis himself! I was shaking all over like a papyrus puppet. He looked down at me with the stern, emotionless gaze of a God, but I think I saw him smile for just a moment.
He is so tall! Taller than Papa or Sekhemib. Ten cubits, at least. His fur is short and smooth as can be, gleaming black like polished onyx. His sandals and clothing shine with gold and jewels. And while his eyes show centuries of wisdom, he has the body of a young man. Complete with a well-muscled chest and calves. I could not help my heart beating faster or warmth invading my cheeks...
But then its beats increased out of fear as Ammut came sauntering into view! She truly is as fearsome as her paintings! And she really is part lion, part hippopotamus and part crocodile. She might even have a baboon's tail; I'm not sure. But she is definitely large. On all fours she is taller than I am standing. She snorted and looked at me. I knew if my heart was too heavy, I would soon be stepping into her jaws and would disappear forever!
But Anubis saw my fear and comforted me by stroking my cheek. He did not regard me differently than any other soul, even though he had requested me. This seemed proper since my heart had not been weighed yet. He removed it with a gentleness that left me breathless and trembling! He simply reached into my chest and pulled it out, like dipping his hand into a pond and retrieving a stone. It felt so good I nearly fainted! My breath came haltingly as I felt my chest with both paws; no beat, no rhythm. It was a moment as terrifying as it was exhilarating. This was final proof I was truly in the land beyond life.
Then Anubis showed me the scale, with the feather of Ma'at set to one side. My tail tucked itself between my legs. Never had I been so nervous! Not even before my execution! That was merely the loss of my life; failing this test could mean being condemned to restlessness for eternity!
But it turns out I had nothing to fear. When my heart was placed on the scale, the pan did not even budge. I nearly collapsed with relief. Anubis' stony demeanor broke and he swept me into a hug. He said he always knew I would pass.
He explained everything then. From his palace, he had seen me below and, though he knew the desire was selfish, could not wait until my natural death to meet me. He had to possess me. His last loyal servant had recently earned her passage into the paradise of Aaru and he was in need of a replacement. I am to become his new servant and live with him in Duat for the next thousand years!
My happiness is indescribable!
I threw my arms around his broad, black shoulders and kissed him in gratitude, thanking him again and again for such an honor! My tail wagged like a dragonfly's wing!
We sat at the top of the steps and discussed the terms of my servitude as we waited for my mice to arrive. He even formally introduced Ammut, who is actually as sweet and playful as a cat when she is not acting out her fearsome role of the devourer of souls. Oh, and Anubis also told me that the souls she eats don't stay restless _forever_; they wander inside her just long enough for them to think about their actions and want to change. I told him that sounded very fair. He smiled slyly and said that he lets us mortals believe the more frightening story so we'll be good. Naughty Anubis! (So don't tell anyone about that except Mama and Papa!)
You can let Omi and Ka's parents know they're fine too. They arrived at the temple out of breath, covered in dust and bruises, and grinning ear to ear. They struggled up the stairs, laughing and boasting over which of them had the narrowest escapes from the road's many monsters. Anubis went back to his solemn posture and I hid while the boys had their hearts weighed. They were definitely as awed to meet Anubis as I was. I giggled when they flinched at Ammut!
I had no doubt they would pass, and of course they did. I've always known they've the finest hearts in the land. I ran out to congratulate them. As I will become Anubis' servant, they will remain mine. We're all quite happy with the arrangement.
Soon I will follow Anubis home to meet his wife Anput and begin my duties. Anubis has graciously allowed me to send this message to you, Wamukota. He thought it fair that he should confirm his end of the bargain. He also wanted me to tell you that he gives his thanks to Yahya and Muminah for relaying his visions.
I do not know if I will be allowed to send any more messages through you. So if this is my final farewell, let Mama and Papa know I'll love them always and remember them always and I look forward to meeting them again someday. Give my thanks to Ka & Omi's parents for raising such fine attendants. Thank all the nice priests who mummified me. Thank Tabia and Sekhemib and Yahya and Nezim and all our other servants. Tell my friends at school I hope they live joyful lives. And give yourself a hug and pretend it's my arms around you, dear Wamukota.
Goodbye!
*****
-PAPYRUS FOUR-
{It has been seven months, and once again I find myself waking to find words in front of me that I do not remember writing. I passed on Princess Moswenkiya's message to the Pharaoh and Queen, and asked Yahya to convey some of the rest to the people in the guise of one of his augurings. But this new missive... I'm not sure I dare show it to anyone besides myself! I might be thrown into jail for obscenity!}
My status has shifted completely. Once I was a princess, and now I am a slave.
Wamukota, I may get in trouble for sending you this message and have to spend an afternoon in Ammut's belly, but I couldn't resist any longer sharing my happiness with someone!
Time is strange here. I have no clue how long I have lived in Duat in the home of Master Anubis and Mistress Anput. I only know I wouldn't mind staying forever. My small, cozy quarters are filled with finery that would leave Papa's treasurers speechless. My bed is literally a harnessed cloud! My dresses dazzle with gold and jewels. My sandals are lined with Kafele's fur (I shall explain that momentarily). And there are no more tedious morningtime rituals; I wake and simply wish to be dressed. Suddenly I am! Magic! Then I am ready to begin my day's duties.
I am 100% tireless now. I have found in my heart a deeply fulfilling willingness to serve. Whatever is asked of me, I perform with eager eyes and wagging tail. I do not know if this realm has changed me, or if I have simply uncovered something within myself I never knew. Regardless, I relish it. Sometimes I am so happy for my new life I cannot help but cry.
Ka and Omi are still as helpful as ever also. They handle some of the palace's dirty work while I make sure Anubis is relaxed and entertained. Master Anubis has living stone statues to do most of the cooking and cleaning, but we pitch in too. (There's even a statue in the bathroom that wipes one's backside!)
Since Omi, Ka and I are dead, we cannot die again. This means that if our fur or meat are needed, we can be harvested to furnish them. Then we spring back to life simply by Anubis or Anput blowing us a kiss. I tried not to show my fear the first time Mistress Anput prepared me for dinner. Have I not described her yet? She is nearly as tall as Anubis and a jackaless like me. Her ears are peerlessly beautiful. Her curves are like desert dunes. She is much more informal than her husband. While he watches over all of mortality and beyond, she is content to keep the palace running smoothly. That means sometimes preparing meals. That means sometimes me. She uses a glistening blade carved from pure moonlight. It cuts as sweetly as a caress. All my worries melted away the first time she butchered me. I became a lovely plate of seasoned cutlets and was swimming in drowsy pleasure the whole time.
Since then, I have been eaten or harvested many, many times. My fur has now become a pillow for Anput, a pair of slippers for Anubis, and a full set of pajamas for Kebechet! That took so many deaths it was almost exhausting! Kebechet lives here at the palace too, but she comes and goes as she pleases. I also learned from Anput that she chose her snake form in a fit of teenage rebellion, and liked it so much she never changed back!
As mentioned, both Ka and Omi's fur have become part of my wardrobe, and they are always so eager to be my evening meal I sometimes have to turn them down for variety's sake. Though the scent of spit-roasted mouseboy is certainly one of my favorites. I'm licking my jaws just writing that!
I must describe the palace! It seems somber at first, but I have quickly embraced it as my new home. The floors are black onyx; shined so perfectly they are like mirrors. The Master is quite fond of columns and long hallways. Sometimes the boys and I play ball games in the corridors. The ceilings are glass; magically magnified so you can see all the night sky from any point in the palace. Candles are everywhere; Anput is very fond of them. It makes an enjoyably dim and spooky atmosphere befitting the God of death. Master Anubis' throne is the grandest part of the palace. At the top of a small, wide pyramid with golden steps, he sits and sees across the worlds. The blood-red fabric is so soft it makes me shiver to touch it. I sat in it once and got a spanking afterwards, but it was worth it!
I do not want to give the impression that I have a cruel master. Not at all! Master Anubis spanks me mostly as play, and I find it hard to keep the smile from my face when he has me over his knee. He is normally quite emotionless as he deals with each day's business. Like Kebechet, he can be in many places simultaneously, weighing the hearts of a dozen souls or keeping watch over the land of the living. He is very professional and efficient. He does not smile often, but instead shows his kindness through his touch. His hands are powerful enough to crush stone, yet he pets me with a gentleness that makes me weak. Any moment I am with him I am happy. I am his to command.
Mistress Anput is not jealous. I am her husband's pet and toy, and she has her own besides. Omi & Ka fill that role sometimes. I also notice many handsome newly-dead gentlemen passing through her bedchambers. Just as Master Anubis samples feminine mortals as well. They are Gods, after all.
You may notice I have not mentioned specifics of my duties as Anubis' servant. I have been putting off describing them for fear you will find them scandalous. But as I said, the Gods have a different morality than ours.
My first night, Anubis placed a ruby collar around my throat and led me by a string to his bedchambers. My nervousness showed. His wonderful hands relaxed me. His smoky voice reassured me that he would not ask more of me than I was willing to perform. I was requested to remove his clothing. Like a good servant, I obeyed. Together we sat on his enormous purple bed (blankets sewn from tiger fur!) and he held me close. I felt so tiny! Then I felt a glorious warmth. I looked down to see his manhood. I must admit; I screamed a little. It's length is comparable to Papa's arm! Blacker even than his fur, it glistened with male honey. The scent washed all my thoughts away. My hands reached out and my instincts took over.
I barely remember the rest of that night. I was in a haze. The heat was more powerful than the hottest summers. I did not resist a single thing my Master asked of me. I gave myself to him entirely, to own body and soul forever. Somehow, his fearsome maleness was able to penetrate me. I think I may have died a few times, I'm not sure. I only know that in the morning, I woke up to his soft kisses between my ears, and being told that I had pleased him greatly.
This was not a solitary occurrence. I please my Master almost every night, and am endlessly proud to do so. On my nights off, I share a bed with Ka and Omi, and we practice tender techniques on on another to give even more enjoyment to our masters. My mice have limitless energy. They fill me up like two corks in a bottle.
It's not all hedonism though. When my Master is on his throne, projecting himself to other realms, I often give him a massage. This is difficult, since his shoulders are as broad as an ox, but I'm getting better. Sometimes I simply lie in his lap and let him stroke me as if I were a kitten. Sometimes I even meow to make him laugh. He is also very fond of the taste of my heartsblood (hence why he requested my particular demise), and will often idly drink from me with a straw when we sit together. It doesn't hurt a bit now!
But one of my favorite duties of all is servicing Master Anubis' feet. I could lie at the foot of his throne for hours every day, simply losing myself in rubbing his beautiful paws. The smoothness of his fur, the give of his pawpads beneath my grip... Even their odor is quite stimulating. I make sure Master's paws are always sparkling clean. I lick over every inch with my tongue and always get between the toes. Sometimes my wonderful Master rewards me by using me as a footstool for a while.
Something similar the boys enjoy is the care and feeding of Ammut. She doesn't just eat souls, but normal foods too. Omi and Ka bring her bushels of fresh fruit and meat every day, then comb her coat and play with her. I'll often hear her footfalls thundering down the halls as they playfully chase each other. And naturally, she finds the boys as yummy as I do, so Master Anubis often has to rescue them from her belly. (She's made a meal of me as well sometimes, when I am especially in need of punishment. Though sometimes she also lets me take a nap on her enormous mattress of a tongue.)
My relationships with Mistress Anput and Princess Kebechet are less intensely physical, but still very agreeable. We often hug and enjoy one another's bodies. We talk for hours, swapping stories and memories. They are fond of teaching me new tricks to try on Master Anubis to drive him feral with lust. Other times we simply cuddle. Occasionally I will be invited into the bedroom when the Master and Mistress are amorous. Their lovemaking is so powerful that each time I am reduced to a worn-out frazzled pelt at the end of the evening! But I look forward to it every time nonetheless!
I've met (and serviced) many other deities too. Kebechet is always bringing friends by; often sons and daughters of other gods and goddesses. Amentet and Renpet come over about once a week to lounge around in her room sharing gossip. Wepwawet seems to be a mentor to Anubis, and my Master often comes to the old dog for advice. Thoth also visits quite often to play skill games or discuss philosophy. Anput and Bastet are close comrades too. The cat goddess is especially partial to me and loves braiding my hair and tail. I also enjoy playing along with her endless game of 'seducing' Master Anubis, then letting Anput 'catch' them so they can have lusty battles in the bedroom!
If there's one aspect of my duties I don't entirely care for, it's when Master Anubis needs someone to test an aspect of death for him. The boys usually volunteer to show how brave they are. But I nonetheless get called upon as well. Since Master Anubis oversees all deaths, he must make sure they all produce correct results. Also that they send all mortals to the first gates of Duat like they're supposed to. Consequently, I now know what it's like to die from scorpion sting (extremely unpleasant pinchy pain), to be buried alive in sand (panicky at first, put pleasant in a tactile way), to be crushed under heavy falling stones (that one was kind of fun in a frightening way), to be struck by lightning (over too quickly to be sure) and to be decapitated (I will admit to enjoying the strangeness of holding my own head in my paws). Master Anubis always makes the pain go away afterwards and rewards us with praise, kisses and extra desserts at dinner. Plus he lets us relax afterwards by sinking in the quicksand pit. I love the feel of nice cool mud squishing between my toes!
My very favorite way to expire is when Master Anubis simply *wills* us to death. I love to feel the awesome power of his spirit commanding my essence to calmness. He usually does this when he needs to go away on errands and can't take Omi, Ka and I along. Then we are lovingly killed and taken to the room of living bandages (I've snuck in many times to let them capture me and hold me helpless until I am rescued!). We are mummified together and left in a cozy pile. Wrapped up wonderfully tight, sometimes for days and weeks at a time! Immobilized in darkness and linen... You cannot know how much my heart leaps when Master Anubis informs us he has been called away on business.
Yesterday was typical. I woke up, garbed myself in shades of gold and pink, then pounced my mice to awaken them. Then the boys went to work giving Ammut a bath (She only trampled them a little bit) while I went to my Master's bedchamber to begin my daily service. I found him asleep with Kebechet. I told you Gods are different! We snuggled together in the sheets for a while before it was time to begin the day. I helped them both get dressed, then aided Kebechet in the shower. She says she'll be shedding her skin soon and will make me some lovely gloves and boots from it. I can't wait! Later at the breakfast table, Ka, Omi and I served our Masters steaming crocodile sausages with scrambled swan's eggs, then listened as Anubis talked work. He said there seemed to be another war on the horizon in the northern lands, so he might be busier than usual soon. He left to sit on his throne while I went with Mistress Anput and Kebechet to see some musicians perform in the garden. Lovely! Hours later I scampered to the throne room to find my Master lost in his duties and frightfully anxious. Ashamed of letting him get to such a state, I leapt to action. I lowered his pants and vigorously soothed his tension with my paws and tongue. This did wonders for his mood but required me to take a shower afterwards! At lunch, the stone servants led me to the kitchen and made me into a very savory rice and onion soup. Anput made sure to revive me so I could enjoy a bowl of myself too. Kebechet left for a date with Nefertum. I rejoined Master in the throne room and attended to his gorgeous feet for many hours. His soles hypnotized all my thoughts away. He took a break after a while to release some energy, and came back an hour later with an elephantlike demon he'd slain in the jungle with his bare hands. It was hard to chew but otherwise delicious. After dinner we servants were given some free time. We splashed in the pool and challenged each other to stay under the longest. Soon enough Anput was fishing us out and reviving us. We all got spanked but she was grinning too much to be genuinely cross. In the evening, the Master and Mistress called us three to their shared bedchamber. With a bit of pulling and folding, we were flattened into blankets for them to lie upon. Their warm weight on top of me was most satisfying, as were their cries and howls of love. It's good to see them so happy. I know some Gods and Goddesses have hasty tempers and volcanic marriages, but my owners seem the perfect picture of frisky contentment.
If this is where I am to stay for the next thousand years, I cannot imagine a happier afterlife. What more could Aaru hold for me than this? What greater paradise could it aspire to be? I have love and purpose here. I have my mice. I yearn only to be the best servant I can for my beloved Master and Mistress.
Worry not for me, Wamukota. Sometimes I am granted the privilege of sharing Master Anubis' cosmic sight. I can see into the world of the living. I can see my cute new brother, Nakhti-Senbi, and am so glad he's doing well. I can see the beautiful paintings of my sarcophagus and am glad the people can appreciate the beauty Tabia put into it. And I can see Mama and Papa. I know they still mourn for me. But tell them that the years we will be separated are but a heartbeat in the afterworld. We will all see each other again. In time, we may even be reborn to new lives with new memories someday. Until then, I am safe and well cared for, and I do my best to be useful. What life could be better?
Also, there is one other reason I send you these words, not just to confide my joy in. Ma'at visited us the other day and offered me a prophecy. She said that, far in the future, a bolt of thunder from a distant country would help spread my story to new generations. So I should be sure to send him thanks. Maybe I'll know what that means someday.
That's all I can think of to tell, Wamukota. You have my gratitude for once again being my conduit. One day, when your heart is weighed, I shall be the first to welcome you with a great big kiss on your old bald head.
All my love,
First servant Moswenkiya
~~~~~

Translator's notes:
     A fanciful tale or a true account of what awaits us beyond this life? Who can say? All I know is, this project has troubling yet pulse-poundingly intriguing import for me.
     As a schoolboy, my nickname on the soccer field was "The Thunderbolt".
     Coincidence? Ah, probably.
     Yet I cannot stop myself from wondering...
          -James Silksmith, Cairo

\tTHE END
\tfor now...

*****
AUTHOR'S NOTES:
I'm fully aware that large parts of this little tale wouldn't stand the test of historical accuracy, but I at least tried. Such as "Blood-Drinker Who Comes From The Slaughterhouse" and "One Who Eats The Excrement Of His Hindquarters".

Also, yes, this was partly inspired by me watching Don't Eat The Pictures as a kid.

Thanks go to my Skype proofreading team of Robby, Relee, Kanada and a little bit of Landon. (Even if it at times descended into everyone doing Radu impressions.) Thanks too to the help offered by Alfador and Zephon. May all your hearts weigh what they should. ;)

The Diary Of Princess Nedjes-Moswenkiya
Started 04/12/13, Finished 4/18/13, Editing completed 5/21/13",
