Leilani got out of bed. The widowed fox realized she was becoming too pregnant to do much on her own. Weak from childhood, she couldn’t help but be handicapped by her state. She summoned the energy to force herself up. Getting herself dressed was a pain, because only one thing fit her anymore, and it still left her pregnant belly exposed. She decided she’d buy more clothes later. As she walked to the door, she saw the gifts given to her awhile back by friendly strangers. She took these and put them in her purse. She felt the need to keep them safe. She decided she’d deposit them in the bank after work. She went to the bus stop, but it was there and about to depart. She ran and tapped on the door to stop the driver. He disregarded her and set off. She waited for the next bus. When it finally came and brought her to work, she was half an hour late. She punched in when her superior saw her late. He yelled at her for coming in late, not caring about her frail state. Her boss was terrible to non-humans; she needed work, so she had to endure. She apologized and promised not to be late again. He threatened to cut her pay next time, and then left her. She got to work. It was a long day, and she had no breakfast, and no lunch break, so she worked all day hungry. After work, she went to the bank. However, when the teller saw what she had, he got suspicious. He left for a moment and police came and arrested the poor girl, accused her of theft, and brought her in for inquiring. She explained to the officers they were gifts. They didn’t believe her, but she kept telling them. They took notice of her circumstance, and decided to let her go. She went back to the bank and had enough time to store her gifts and head back to her building. When she arrived, the whole building was on fire. Firefighters put it out, but not soon enough. She lay down on the bus bench, and cried until she fell asleep. She was awakened by a fox that looked like her dead mate. He was worried. She just looked to what remained of her building. He understood what she meant. He held out a paw to her, and she took it.
