Ship: Sonic x Tails
Topic: Mysterious Assailant

First the part I wrote out for the cancelled fic, just for shits & giggles; then the outline I made. The outline is the contest entry.

It was a gorgeous morning as the sun shone through Tails' window. Light spilled across his pure white bedsheets and soon struck his face, causing the fox male to begin to stir. "Bright... so bright... Isn't it supposed to rain today?" he mumbled sleepily, turning over away from the sun. Something rustled under him as he turned his head on the pillow. It felt like paper. His eyes shot open. "What's this?" he mumbled, sitting up with a yawn and picking up the note left on his pillow. Written in red ink, it said, "I'm gonna GET you!" His sleepy mind took a moment to process this information before he leapt out of the covers with alarm. "GET me?? W-who would do that?? And they were already in my house, what the heck?!" he babbled nervously. The fox grabbed for his cell phone sitting on his bedside table and immediately dialed the one person he knew he could trust. "S-sonic... someone's after me! Can you come over?" he said with fear in his voice. Before he knew it, a blur of blue sped into his room, solidifying in the form of his best friend, Sonic. "Sooner done than said, buddy! Who's after you? Lemme at 'em!" he said with a cocky smirk, eager to fight the fox's battle. Tails sat on the edge of the bed and handed Sonic the note, which he looked over quickly. "Oh, I see... No signature. Then we'll have to figure out who wrote this note and why. And maybe how they got it in here without you knowing. Don't worry, bud, we'll solve this! No one's gonna 'get' you on my watch!" he declared, giving Tails a hug to put him at ease. His fox friend nodded. "I knew I could count on you. So, I think where we should start is..." Sonic shushed him, "I got it covered..." he promised Tails.

Sonic dashed out really quick and returned with another scrap of paper. "This is a letter from Eggman that came with a bomb he sent me one time. That worked out real well. Anyway, let's compare the handwriting..." Tails watched as Sonic strained to see any similarity in the handwriting of the two notes. "Not even close... I'm amazed you thought of this...and even saved that note." Tails stated. Sonic chuckled. "I thought of using the note in a sorta 'return to sender' gag if I ever got the chance... Alright then, let's rattle off the suspects...who would want to do you harm besides Eggman..." he murmured. Tails scratched his head. "I don't know. I haven't done anything to anyone..." he stated. Sonic chuckled. "I know but that don't stop us from makin' enemies. Like Zavok and Infinite...they could be suspects. Or that freaky Tails Doll, ugh... What about Nack the weasel, or your rival Wave? I don't trust Rouge either... There was that Battle Bird Armada you beat up years ago... and Knuckles." he concluded. Tails tilted his head in confusion. "Why Knuckles?" he wondered. "...I just like saying 'and Knuckles' for some reason. He's not smart enough to pull this off, sneaking into your house without being noticed..." Sonic chuckled. As Sonic thought over the list of suspects, Tails looked at him admiringly. "You're putting so much thought into this for me... Thanks, Sonic. I feel much safer with you here." he smiled, inching closer to the hedgehog as he sat on the edge of the bed. Sonic looked at him and smiled back. "You'd do the same for me, wouldn't you? Don't you worry...even if this is Infinite I'll keep you safe." he promised.

outline (scenes are paragraphs, or would have been)

Scene 1. Tails awakens to find a note on his pillow: "I'm gonna get you!" Nervous, he calls Sonic to protect him, and Sonic speeds over. He decides to deduce the identity of whoever wrote the note.

Scene 2. He compares the handwriting against the prime suspect: Dr. Eggman. No match. He also starts compiling a list of suspects. Tails is impressed with how much thought Sonic is putting in, and feels safe with him around.

Scene 3. The lights flicker and lightning strikes, leading Tails to jump into Sonic's arms. Tails feels Sonic's heart beat faster as he sits in his embrace. A clue surfaces: the lights failing was no accident. (they find the circuit breakers sabotaged, only a tech-savvy mind could do it the way they find it)

Scene 4. As Sonic and Tails search the house for the intruder, Sonic insists Tails stay close. He couldn't bear to lose him. Tails wants to tell Sonic why he chose to call him, but more clues surface; his workshop is ransacked. His inventions including his Extreme Gear, T-pup, and Miles Electric tablet are damaged.

Scene 5. Tails is suddenly missing when lightning strikes again. Sonic starts to panic; he can't lose Tails. He speeds through the house, finding even more clues along the way... (music playing "Can You Feel the Sunshine" hints at Tails Doll, but there are feathers too, the color hard to see in the dark)

Scene 6. Sonic finds the culprit, Wave (Tails Doll clues are a red herring), who was only pranking Tails to get back at him for beating her in a race. She leaves Tails tied up, but Sonic sticks her own note on her back on the way out, promising to prank her back.

Scene 7. Sonic and Tails express relief that the other is okay, and before they can get too much talking done, Sonic kisses Tails, confessing that their friendship has grown into love. Tails feels the same way, and wants Sonic to spend the night.

Scene 8? (optional). They have gentle, loving sex before sleeping, with Sonic letting Tails top him after his frightful ordeal. They hope to always be a team forever. The End.  

(story would have easily been under 5000 words, I've used this scene structure lots of times and rarely breached it)
