Copying a model you can see in action in a video in pretty much any angle is easier than making them from scratch.

I get that SFM has lowered the barrier for entry into 3D "animation" but man everything made with SFM really does look like shit. And I think it discourages legit 3D artists since someone can spend days/weeks working on something in Maya/3DS Max/Blender/etc, and only get a tiny fraction of the views/attention a shitty SFM video gets. Or even if it is popular, they can't churn them out at the rate of SFM videos.

Pic related. Look at Rarity's fucking leg, for instance.

Then they should make a better product, then. It's retarded to get mad at SFM for making animation more accessible to newcomers. It's not some elitist secret club anymore.

Here's a Windows HyperV virtual machine image (you probably need Windows 10 Pro for this) I set up that has the correct version of Maya and all the plugins. The login password is a single dot, and the models themselves are in C:\maya

The problem is that making a model, rig and animation takes damn long and in the end you cant really put ponies into your portfolio for job applications, so except for some practice and a bit of horse fame you dont get anything out of it. Sfm models already have a pretty good rig and sfm is a hobbyist tool, its limited but easy to learn

In a nutshell: its barely useful for people who are more serious into 3d shit, so there just will always be lots of sfm stuff. Not a fan of those models aswell but im happy we at least got that technology, without it thered be way less 3d content

I don't actually know, but I'd guess it's free, has props and maps (or at least can really easily get them from Source games), and is geared towards animation instead of general 3D work like the other tools.
